Job Description

Model Validator

ING is looking for enthusiastic Risk Professionals. The Credit Risk Model Validation Team is an energetic international team of highly qualified professionals within the Model Risk Management department. This fast growing team is responsible for validating the risk models used by ING worldwide. We assure that models are appropriate for the intended use and compliant with internal policies and external regulations. Our goal is to increase ING’s understanding of a model’s limitations and weaknesses, contribute to ongoing model improvement, and ensure the added value of models.

The team

You will join the Credit Risk Model Validation Team within Model Risk Management. The team is responsible for independently validating risk models used across ING globally and assessing whether these models are fit for purpose and compliant with internal policies and external regulations. You will work in an international environment alongside highly qualified professionals and contribute to strengthening model quality and model risk management across the bank.

Roles and responsibilities

Your model scope is broad and includes IRB (PD/EAD/LGD), IFRS9, Credit Risk Economic Capital, Stress Testing, Climate Risk and non-regulatory models such as credit risk feeder models, underwriting models or early-warning systems.

  • Conduct independent model validations and assess model performance and model risk.
  • Challenge models, methodologies, assumptions, and risk classifications.
  • Identify model weaknesses, formulate findings, and propose actionable recommendations.
  • Prepare comprehensive validation reports and present conclusions to stakeholders.
  • Independently challenge the 1st Line of Defense regarding model risk matters.
  • Provide expert advice on model risk topics and participate in thematic reviews.
  • Guide and coach more junior validators during assessments.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of validation frameworks, processes, and tooling.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with model developers, model owners, auditors, and regulators.
  • Evaluate business impact and dependencies when assessing model-related solutions and changes.

How to succeed

We hire smart people like you for your potential. Our biggest expectation is that you’ll stay curious. Keep learning. Take on responsibility. In return, we’ll back you to develop into an even more awesome version of yourself.

  • Hold an academic degree (MSc or PhD) in Econometrics, Mathematics, Physics, Economics or another quantitative field, enabling you to analyze complex modelling topics.
  • Bring relevant work experience with credit risk models (PD/LGD/EAD) to effectively assess model performance and risk. We are open to receiving applications from different levels of seniority.
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of modelling and validation in either A-IRB or IFRS9 environments.
  • Apply programming skills in SAS or a similar programming language to support model assessments and analyses.
  • Work independently with a creative and proactive approach to solving complex validation challenges.
  • Use a critical yet constructive mindset to challenge assumptions and drive model improvements.
  • Collaborate effectively as a team player within an international environment.
  • Communicate clearly and write high-quality reports in English for a broad stakeholder audience.
