The MLS Compliance (MLSC) participates in all activities within the Product Quality Control (PQC) Department, including performing testing and services associated with assigned departmental duties within the scope of complexity defined by accrediting agencies. This position participates in ongoing competency, proficiency, and educational activities, including laboratory training, mentoring, and competency evaluations, as needed. The MLSC will also perform required functions off-site at local and regional CBC locations.
The MLSC contributes to broader educational efforts (e.g., tours, presentations) and participates in critical document review and approval processes. Through these responsibilities, the MLSC ensures that daily operations in the PQC laboratories and Carter BloodCare (CBC) Donor Centers (DCs) meet and follow all established guidelines, provide excellence in service, and meet the needs of all PQC customers.
The MLSC exemplifies and champions CBC Core Values and Code of Conduct and adheres to CBC policies and applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). To support ongoing development and organizational goals, the MLSC is required to attend meetings and training sessions, as assigned.
The MLSC maintains active, current professional licensure and/or certifications as required by role-specific regulations and organizational requirements. A valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record (as specified in the current Vehicle Safety Loss Control Guidelines) are required. Regular travel between assigned work areas to support other locations/projects across CBC service regions is required.
This position may require working varied shifts, extended hours, weekends, and/or overtime to support operational needs. Regular full-time attendance is required during normal working hours
QualificationsEDUCATION
- Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral Degree(s) in Chemical, Biological, Clinical or Medical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology from an accredited institution, as outlined in 42 CFR 493.1411(b)
- Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) Board Certification: MLS(ASCP), MT(AAB), MLS(AMT), H(ASCP) or equivalent Board Certification and participation in the CME program, if applicable and required by the accrediting agency
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of 2 years of non-waived and/or moderate to high complexity laboratory experience
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record
- Hematology and/or microbiology laboratory experience, preferred
- Blood center laboratory experience, preferred
- Point-of-care testing, hospital experience, preferred
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
- Maintains a strong working knowledge of moderate complexity testing and instrumentation utilized in the PQC Department and at CBC Donor Centers (DC); Working knowledge of the parameters associated with donor collections and the equipment used
- Applies critical thinking and problem-solving skills to analyze complex situations, identify solutions, and provide clear guidance to internal and external customers, including appropriate documentation of issues and resolutions
- Ability to concentrate, understand moderate to complex problems and to collaborate and explore alternative solutions; Ability to organize thoughts and ideas into understandable terminology
- Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing, with diverse audiences, ensuring information is conveyed clearly, accurately, and professionally
- Utilizes laboratory mathematics and data analysis skills to compute, interpret, and report numerical data accurately
- Demonstrates strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize workload, maintain attention to detail, and ensure consistent follow-through
- Ability to make decisions which have a significant impact on the department’s credibility, operations and services
- Exercises sound judgment and decision-making, with awareness of the impact on departmental operations, service quality, and compliance
PHYSICAL/MENTAL STRESS FACTORS
- Stress associated with exposure to potential biohazard areas, materials, blood, body fluids, chemicals and cleaning solutions (OSHA Job Category I)
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
- Ability to perform repetitive motion (e.g., typing, stripping of tubing, pipetting)
- Ability to detect varying degrees of hemolysis and distinguish the difference between colors and shades of colors
- Mental stress due to high customer service demands and working with strict deadlines; Ability to exchange and document accurate information and perform services under these high-stress and emergent conditions
- Ability to multitask effectively and demonstrate organizational skills to meet departmental needs and CBC Collections Departments availability needs
- Occasionally moves supplies weighing up to 40 pounds (with assistance, if needed)
- Ability to frequently move around the lab, and between other departments and locations at CBC
- Stress associated frequent local and regional travel across all CBC service regions, with driving as a regular component of the role.
- Stress associated with working overtime, holidays and being On Call/Call Back, as needed
- Stress associated with an overnight stay in a location provided by CBC during inclement weather and/or disaster situations, as deemed necessary by the PQC Management team
