PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITY
The Medical Laboratory Scientist – Blood Banker (MLS-BB) participates in all activities within Reference & Transfusion (R&T) Services, including performing testing and services associated with assigned departmental duties within the scope of complexity defined by accrediting agencies, and participating in competency, proficiency, and educational activities. Through these responsibilities, the MLS-BB ensures daily R&T laboratory operations meet all established regulatory and quality standards, deliver excellence in transfusion services, and support the needs of all R&T customers.
The MLS-BB exemplifies and champions Carter BloodCare (CBC) Core Values and Code of Conduct, and adheres to CBC policies and applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). To support ongoing development and organizational goals, the MLS-BB is required to attend meetings and training sessions, as assigned.
The MLS-BB maintains active and current professional licensure and/or certifications, as required by role-specific regulations and organizational requirements.
Periodic travel between assigned work areas to support other locations/projects in CBC service regions, as well as to attend in-services, training, and meetings, is required. This position may require working varied shifts, extended hours, weekends, and/or overtime to support operational needs.
Regular full-time attendance is required during normal working hours.
QualificationsEDUCATION
- Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral Degree from an accredited institution, in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemical, Physical, or Biological Science, as outlined in 42 CFR 493.1489(b)
- Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) Board Certification: MLS(ASCP), BB(ASCP), MLS(AMT), or equivalent Board Certification and participation in the CME program, if applicable and required by the accrediting agency; or,
- Recent graduate from an accredited MLS program within the last five years and is currently Board-eligible
NOTE: Must successfully obtain and maintain Board Certification (e.g., MLS(ASCP) or equivalent) and provide Board Certification documentation to the CBC Human Resources Department within 12 months of the hire date
EXPERIENCE
- Prior clinical laboratory experience, including rotations via an accredited MLS program
- Recent immunohematology laboratory experience, including rotations via an accredited MLS or equivalent program, preferred
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
- Maintains strong working knowledge of blood banking policies, procedures, and applicable accrediting and regulatory requirements
- Applies critical thinking and problem-solving skills to analyze complex situations, identify solutions, and provide clear guidance to internal and external customers, including appropriate documentation of issues and resolutions
- Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing, with diverse audiences, ensuring information is conveyed clearly, accurately, and professionally
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal and customer service skills, building effective relationships that promote trust, collaboration, and positive outcomes
- Understands, interprets, and applies verbal and written instructions, guidelines, and technical information in a consistent and accurate manner
- Utilizes laboratory mathematics and data analysis skills to compute, interpret, and report numerical data accurately
- Demonstrates strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize workload, maintain attention to detail, and ensure consistent follow-through
- Exercises sound judgment and decision-making, with awareness of the impact on departmental operations, service quality, and compliance
PHYSICAL/MENTAL STRESS FACTORS
- Stress associated with exposure to potential biohazard areas, materials, blood, body fluids, chemicals, and cleaning solutions (OSHA Job Category I)
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
- Ability to perform repetitive motion (e.g., typing, pipetting, tube shaking)
- Ability to detect red blood cell agglutination, discern mixed field reactivity, and/or distinguish the difference between colors and shades of colors
- Mental stress due to high customer service demands and working with strict deadlines; Ability to exchange and document accurate information and perform testing under these high-stress and emergent conditions
- Ability to multitask effectively to meet patient and inventory availability needs; Ability to establish appropriate priorities, to recognize and do what needs to be done, without direction; Ensures work is completed efficiently and supports teamwork and cooperation with co-workers and peers
- Occasionally moves supplies weighing up to 40 pounds (with assistance, if needed)
- Ability to frequently move around the lab and between other departments at CBC
- Stress associated with working overtime, holidays and being On Call/Call Back, as needed
- Stress associated with an overnight stay in a location provided by CBC during inclement weather and/or disaster situations, as deemed necessary by the R&T management team
