Job Description

1 - Working at the VUB

Are you our MLOps Engineer who will help us to get to the next level with ML/AI?

VUB is always looking for new talent to grow with us.

For more than 50 years, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel has stood for f reedom, equality and solidarity, and this is very much alive on our campuses among students and staff alike.

At the VUB, you will find a diverse collection of personalities: innovators pur sang, but above all people who are 100% their authentic selves With some 4,000 employees, we are the largest Dutch-speaking employer, in the private sector, in Brussels; an international city with which we are only too happy to connect and where (around) our 4 campuses are located.

Add to this our principle of free research - in which self-reflection, a critical attitude and an open, creative mind around scientific and social issues are central - and you have a university that is fundamentally groundbreaking and pioneering in education and research. In short: the VUB all over again

Moreover, the VUB is a member of EUTOPIA, an alliance of like-minded European universities, all ready to reinvent themselves

2 - Position Description

The Scientific Compute & Data team ( https://hpc.vub.be) provides scientific computing and data storage services to the research community. Amongst others the team operates sofia, the new Tier-1 supercomputer of the VSC (Flemish Supercomputer Centre, https://www.vscentrum.be), the VUB Tier-2 supercomputer, and a large-capacity storage platform. The team also contributes to the Belgian AI Factory Antenna, which offers AI/ML services to companies and academia along with access to the AI-optimized hardware of the connected AI Factories ( LUMI-AI and JAIF).

At the same time, the VUB is exploring the use of AI in its internal processes. Together with the VUB's AI researchers, several new GenAI-based pilot applications are being developed. These applications now need to be deployed and maintained in a reliable, secure, and scalable production environment.

To support all these activities, we are looking for a new colleague who can help build, deploy, and operate these advanced computing and AI services.

Your responsibilities:

  • Support users in operationalising AI workflows and scaling prototypes by providing hands-on guidance for pipeline setup, debugging, and optimisation.

  • Collaborate closely with AI experts, data engineers, and domain scientists across a diverse portfolio of AI projects in academia, industry, and the public sector to design, deploy and support scalable machine learning and GenAI workflows. Lead the technical implementation, integration, and deployment of AI solutions supporting VUB's administrative processes.

  • Provide third-line operational support for production AI applications and services.

  • Contribute to documentation, tutorials, internal knowledge sharing, and training activities.

  • Guide users through access procedures for the VUB HPC infrastructure and the associated EuroHPC AI Factories.

For this function, our campus in Etterbeek will serve as your home base (partially working from home is allowed).
