Job Description


Duties and responsibilities:


1.Initial Assessment and Feasibility Studies:


  • Conduct site assessments to evaluate potential locations for Minigrid installations.

  • Perform feasibility studies, including resource assessments (solar irradiation, water flow rates, etc.).

  • Analyze local energy demand and load profiles to determine system requirements.


2. System Design and Engineering:


  • Develop detailed design specifications for solar PV arrays, BESS, and small hydro power systems.

  • Create system architecture diagrams integrating generation, storage, and distribution components.

  • Use simulation tools (e.g., HOMER, PVSyst) to model energy production and system performance.

  • Ensure designs comply with local, regional, and international regulations and standards.


3. Component Selection and Sizing:


  • Select appropriate photovoltaic panels, inverters, and other solar components.

  • Determine the optimal size and type of BESS, considering capacity, discharge rates, and lifecycle.

  • Design hydro power systems, including turbine selection, flow control mechanisms, and generators.

  • Ensure all components are compatible and meet the system’s design specifications.

4. Grid Integration and Control Systems:

  • Design smart grid integration plans to ensure seamless connectivity with the existing power grid.

  • Develop control strategies to optimize energy flow and storage.

  • Implement systems for real-time monitoring and control.


5. Optimization and Efficiency Enhancements:


  • Conduct system optimization studies to maximize efficiency and minimize losses.

  • Implement advanced algorithms for demand-side management and peak shaving.

  • Evaluate and integrate renewable energy forecasting models to improve system reliability.

  • Analyze test data and make necessary adjustments to system design and operation strategies


6. Cost Analysis and Budget Management :


  • Review detailed cost estimates for system components, installation,

  • Stay updated with the latest technological advancements in renewable energy and smart grid systems.

  • Engage in continuous improvement initiatives and projects to enhance system performance.


8. Maintenance, Reporting and Documentation:


  • Implement long-term monitoring systems to track performance and identify issues.

  • Conduct regular evaluations to assess system efficiency and identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Prepare comprehensive reports detailing design specifications, performance metrics, and optimization results


Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, or a related field

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in engineering, with a focus on power system design - renewable energy and mini-grid design experience is an added advantage.

  • A proven track record of leading engineering teams and managing complex projects.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to develop innovative solutions.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Proficiency in relevant design software.

  • In-depth knowledge of industry standards and regulatory requirements.


Desired Qualifications:


  • EPRA license.

  • Experience with renewable energy systems, including solar, wind, and battery storage.

  • Familiarity with grid integration systems.
