Steelmaking Coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world.
Dawson Mine is a large and dynamic open cut steelmaking coal mine operation made up of two operating pits - Central and South. It commenced operations in 1961 and is one of the oldest coal mining operations in Central Queensland with no signs of slowing down. Dawson Mine is rich in history, it was the first mine in Australia to export coal to Japan in 1961 and was the first mine to introduce draglines into its operation in 1963 – join the legacy today!
Dawson Mine has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Geologist to join our team on a permanent basis in Moura, QLD. Working within the Technical Services team, you will be part of a collaborative and supportive environment where your expertise will contribute to the success of mining operations and the ongoing optimisation of our resource. This is an excellent opportunity to grow your career alongside industry-leading professionals.
Reporting to the Technical Services Superintendent (Geology), the Geologist provides operational geological support to maximise the safe, efficient and profitable extraction of coal resources.
Working closely with Mining, CHPP and Technical Services teams, the role is responsible for daily geological support activities including pit mapping, coal seam interpretation, data validation, coal quality monitoring and geological hazard identification, which underpin the development of short-term geological interpretation and reconciliation processes.
The Geologist provides timely geological advice to support operational decision-making, optimise resource recovery, minimise coal loss and dilution, and ensure product coal quality specifications are achieved. Through ongoing reconciliation and review of mining outcomes, the role contributes to continuous improvement in geological understanding, mine planning assumptions and operational performance.
The successful candidate will be a practical, safety-focused geologist who enjoys working in a dynamic operational environment. You will be comfortable spending significant time in the field, collaborating with mining crews and technical teams, and providing timely geological advice that supports production, coal quality and business performance.
