The Middle School Head Girls Basketball Coach will lead the basketball program by teaching fundamental skills, fostering sportsmanship, and ensuring the safety of student-athletes. Key duties include running daily practices, coaching competitive games, monitoring players' academic eligibility, managing equipment, and maintaining clear communication with parents and school administration.

Job Responsibilities and Duties:

Coaching & Player Development

  • Skill Instruction: Teach fundamental basketball techniques, offensive/defensive strategies, and rules appropriate for middle school athletes.
  • Practice Planning: Organize and run daily practices focused on physical conditioning, teamwork, and individual player growth.
  • Game Management: Determine game strategies based on team capabilities and provide active coaching during scheduled games and tournaments.
  • Character Building: Foster a positive, inclusive team culture emphasizing sportsmanship, integrity, and leadership.

Program Administration

  • Tryouts & Rosters: Conduct fair tryouts, select team members, and finalize rosters in accordance with athletic department policies.
  • Equipment & Facilities: Oversee the proper care, inventory, and security of uniforms, basketballs, and practice facilities.
  • Scheduling: Assist the Athletic Director with coordinating practice times, game schedules, and transportation for away games.
  • Compliance: Adhere to all league rules, state athletic association guidelines (if applicable), and local school board policies.

Student Supervision & Safety

  • Athlete Monitoring: Oversee student-athletes at all times during practices, games, locker room usage, and team travel.
  • Academics & Behavior: Monitor the academic performance, attendance, and general conduct of athletes to ensure they remain eligible to play.
  • Safety Protocols: Implement emergency action plans, manage injury reporting, and guarantee first aid/CPR certifications are up to date.

Communication & Public Relations

  • Parent Relations: Hold preseason meetings with parents to communicate expectations, game schedules, and team policies.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Maintain professional correspondence with players, the Athletic Director, school faculty, and the community.
  • Media & Stats: Report game scores, highlights, and team statistics to local media or athletic websites as required.

Qualifications

Valid CPR/First Aid certification, concussion training, and State (WVSSAC)/district-mandated coaching certifications.

Previous experience coaching or playing, ideally at the middle school or high school level.

Terms of Employment

Extracurricular Contract for the 2026-2027 School Year

Compensation

Established by the Clay County Board of Education coaching salary schedule.
