Start Date: August 2026
Schedule: Standard School Day
Primary Reporting Line: Head Chaplain
Secondary Reporting Line: Middle School Division Head
What You'll Do
Lead Meaningful Worship & Spiritual Formation
You'll create chapel experiences that speak to middle schoolers where they are - spiritually curious, developmentally in transition, and hungry for belonging.
- Plan and lead weekly Middle School chapel services that are biblically rooted, inclusive, reflective of Lovett's Core Values, and welcoming to all faiths
- Design worship experiences that engage middle school students - using story, music, silence, movement, questions, and space for reflection
- Support and participate in planning all-school chapels and additional worship opportunities for students, faculty, and staff
- Create age-appropriate spiritual formation experiences that meet middle schoolers' developmental needs - honoring their questions, doubts, and emerging identities
- Foster interfaith understanding and dialogue by creating opportunities for the community to learn about and observe important non-Christian holidays such as the Jewish High Holidays, Diwali, and Eid
- Work with Student Resource Groups to ensure students from all faith backgrounds feel seen, valued, and included in Lovett's spiritual life
Teach Religion with Academic Rigor & Pastoral Heart
You'll teach up to two religion classes per semester, helping students engage sacred texts, theological concepts, and ethical questions.
- Teach meaningful, academically substantive, age-appropriate religion classes (up to 2 per semester) in alignment with Lovett's K-12 religion curriculum
- Help develop and refine new and existing courses that are intellectually rigorous, spiritually formative, and relevant to middle schoolers' lives
- Engage students in exploring sacred texts, theological traditions, and ethical questions with curiosity and critical thinking
- Create inclusive learning environments where students of all faith backgrounds (and no faith background) feel welcomed and challenged
- Collaborate with religion department colleagues across divisions to ensure curricular coherence and excellence
Provide Pastoral Care & Support
You'll be a trusted adult who listens, supports, and walks alongside students, faculty, and staff through both ordinary days and difficult seasons.
- Offer pastoral care to students, faculty, and staff - being present, listening deeply, and responding with compassion
- Make appropriate referrals to professional counselors when requested or deemed necessary
- Provide immediate and ongoing emotional and spiritual support to the Lovett community in times of hardship or loss
- Respond to concerns regarding the spiritual life of the school with wisdom, care, and timely action
- Navigate sensitive conversations about faith, doubt, grief, identity, and meaning with warmth, calm, and non-judgment
- Build trusting relationships with middle schoolers who are navigating big questions and significant life transitions
Champion Belonging, Service & Faith Formation
You'll help create a school culture where love, belonging, and service are not just values we talk about - they're how we live.
- Serve as a member of the interdivisional Faith & Flourishing team, exploring and implementing ways to institutionalize love and belonging at The Lovett School
- Work with Head Chaplain and religion teachers to coordinate divisional Bible study opportunities for students
- Partner with Middle School Service Coordinator(s) to plan and execute meaningful service opportunities for students and families
- Use an action-reflection model in service programming to maximize student growth, spiritual formation, and learning
- Help students connect service to faith, understanding how compassion, justice, and love translate into action
Serve as a Faith Ambassador & Community Member
You'll represent Lovett's Episcopal identity while creating space for all students to explore their own spiritual journeys.
- Act as an ambassador of Lovett's faith identity at all times - modeling what it means to be rooted in Christian tradition while honoring religious diversity
- Work to see everyone at Lovett, regardless of religious orientation or interest, as your charge - you genuinely care for students of all faith backgrounds (and no faith background)
- Encourage and promote interfaith dialogue, sharing, and learning across the community
- Serve on the all-school chaplaincy team and Middle School Administrative Team
- Participate in department, faculty, team, and grade-level meetings as required
- Fulfill additional duties as assigned, including occasional weekend and evening responsibilities (admission open houses, student events, observations, interviews)
