The Middle School Assistant Girls Basketball Coach will support the head coach in fostering player development, fundamental skills, and sportsmanship in a positive environment. Key responsibilities include planning practices, managing games, supervising student-athletes, and ensuring safety.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

• Practice and Game Support: Assist with designing and running efficient practices, managing game-day coaching, substitutions, and on-court instruction. Attend all home and away games.
• Fundamental Skill Development: Teach fundamental basketball skills, including dribbling, shooting, and defense, while fostering a love for the game.
• Supervision and Safety: Ensure student safety at all times, including locker room supervision and monitoring athletes before, during, and after games/practices.
• Student Mentorship: Promote good sportsmanship, teamwork, academic success, and positive behavior, acting as a mentor to young athletes.
• Equipment and Administration: Assist with inventory, care of equipment, and maintaining accurate team records (e.g., injuries, eligibility).
• Communication: Actively communicate with the head coach, athletic director, parents, and players regarding schedules and team policies.

Qualifications

• Certifications: Valid state coaching certification (e.g., West Virginia Department of Education) and completion of all required WVSSAC coursework.
• Experience: Previous coaching or playing experience (e.g., middle school, high school, or collegiate) preferred.
• Skills: Knowledge of basketball rules and fundamental strategies, strong communication skills, and ability to foster a positive environment for middle school athletes.

Extracurricular Contract for the 2026-2027 School Year

Compensation
Established by the Clay County Board of Education coaching salary schedule.
