Purpose of Job

The Middle Market Commercial Underwriter is responsible for underwriting complex commercial, commercial real estate, agricultural, and SBA loan requests for middle market clients. This position performs comprehensive credit analysis of new and existing loan relationships, including borrowers with sophisticated operating structures, multiple entities, and complex financing needs. The underwriter evaluates financial performance, cash flow, collateral, industry trends, and overall credit risk to develop independent credit recommendations and approve loans within assigned authority. Working closely with Relationship Managers, the underwriter structures credit facilities that meet client needs while maintaining sound risk management practices. Responsibilities include preparing detailed credit presentations, assigning risk ratings, coordinating loan documentation and closing activities, and monitoring portfolio performance through renewals, covenant compliance, reporting requirements, and delinquency management. The position serves as a trusted credit partner by identifying emerging risks and supporting the growth and retention of middle market relationships.

Essential Duties

Evaluate borrower financial performance, cash flow, collateral, management, industry dynamics, economic trends, and repayment capacity to determine creditworthiness, assign appropriate risk ratings, and approve or recommend credit actions within assigned authority.
  • Partner closely with Relationship and Portfolio Managers throughout the credit process to understand client objectives, structure appropriate credit solutions, establish financial covenants and monitoring requirements, identify cross-sell opportunities, and provide credit expertise during client interactions and portfolio reviews.
  • Coordinate the credit approval process from application through closing, ensuring timely and accurate underwriting, preparation of credit presentations, risk assessments, and approval documentation while proactively identifying and mitigating credit, operational, and compliance risks.
  • Manage all aspects of loan approval and monitoring activities, including analyzing financial statements, preparing complex credit memorandums, reviewing appraisals, business and personal credit reports, coordinating with legal counsel and internal partners, and reviewing loan documentation for completeness and accuracy.
  • Monitor assigned loan portfolios to ensure timely renewals, receipt of required financial information, covenant compliance, risk rating accuracy, and adherence to loan terms. Identify emerging credit concerns, monitor delinquency trends, and recommend or implement appropriate corrective actions.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of Bank underwriting guidelines, credit policy, lending procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements. Ensure compliance with all federal and state banking regulations, including Bank Secrecy Act, OFAC, Customer Identification Program, Information Security, Identity Theft Red Flags, and other compliance standards.
  • Provide ongoing support and guidance to lending teams by responding to credit-related inquiries, assisting with interim credit reviews and portfolio analyses, supporting special projects and reporting initiatives, and serving as a resource on credit fundamentals, policy interpretation, and underwriting best practices.
  • Perform additional credit administration and leadership responsibilities as assigned, including maintaining adverse action and maturity tracking processes, supporting Regional Credit Administrator functions during absences, assisting with departmental projects, and providing training and mentorship to underwriting and lending staff.
