OF PROGRAM

The Metro Omaha Tobacco Action Coalition (MOTAC) has led tobacco prevention and control efforts in Douglas County for 30 years. MOTAC’s vision is that community members, tobacco control experts, advocates, and policymakers will lead change to embrace a nicotine-free community. Our mission is to prevent and reduce tobacco use and the accompanying health and economic consequences in the Omaha area via prevention through public policy and education. Our current priority areas include expanding smoke-free multiunit housing options; increasing outdoor tobacco-free environments such as parks, entertainment areas, and restaurant/bar patios; reducing the density of tobacco retailers in oversaturated neighborhoods; eliminating the sale of mentholated and flavored tobacco products; and increasing tobacco cessation referrals for those experiencing behavioral health conditions.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

MOTAC is seeking a unique individual to lead, grow, and strengthen the coalition to ensure current and future success. This strategic, forward-thinking, growth-oriented person will build relationships with partners and stakeholders in the community, expand the coalition, and ultimately enhance the supports in the Omaha metro area that prevent youth tobacco and nicotine use, protect people from secondhand smoke and aerosols, increase tobacco cessation, and reduce tobacco-related health disparities. This position will be focused on sustainability and ensuring the coalition is well-positioned to be resilient through changes in political environments, trends, and funding availability. The role will have a great deal of independence, though the person will work closely with the MOTAC Board to ensure outcomes are met and the overall direction is progressing as intended. This person will be the sole dedicated staff member for general coalition functions, so some support duties are also required, such as composing and distributing a regular newsletter, tracking educational and promotional item levels, and managing general coalition social media presence.

About the Person We Envision for This Role

This individual is focused on building a strong and vibrant coalition. This person sees opportunity everywhere and is two steps ahead in their thinking. Ideally, the candidate will have experience in non-profit organizations, social services, public health, and/or community coalitions, understanding the challenges and nuances that go into relationship building and personality management. Experience with local policy advocacy and community organizing work is highly desired. This person will work remotely full-time, thus familiarity and comfort with independent work situations is highly encouraged.

Compensation range: salary is determined by total years of relevant experience (to be discussed upon interview)
Work Schedule: 32 hours per week (8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.); will be adjusted upon hire

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree required and 3+ years of experience.
• Self-motivated and comfort working independently.
• Appropriate remote working set-up with reliable internet connection. The individual should be based in the Omaha metro area, preferably within Douglas County.
• Experience networking in the community.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Valid driver’s license, acceptable driving record.
• Knowledge of non-profits, public health, and marketing.
• Project management experience.
• Media, social media, and website experience.
• Must be available on evenings and weekends as needed for coalition and networking events.
• Experience with advocacy and capacity building.
• Experience in tobacco prevention, public health, and/or community organizing preferred

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Capacity Building

• Develop and nurture relationships with local non-profit organizations, health groups, businesses, decision makers, and individuals to understand needs in the community, promote the coalition, and increase membership.
• Establish relationships with local and state-level elected officials, educating them on tobacco and nicotine issues as appropriate.
• Seek and attend identified and non-identified community networking opportunities.
• Provide orientation for new members.
• Maintain and update database of members and partner organizations. Process annual membership renewals.
• Help identify, develop, and recruit potential new board members from within the coalition membership and externally.
• Assist with onboarding new MOTAC Board members.
• Maintain a volunteer database; recruit and onboard/train volunteers and undergraduate/ graduate students seeking practicum hours.
• Design dynamic and interactive general coalition meetings; arrange for speakers as needed.
• Maintain awareness of potential funding opportunities for the coalition.

Event Planning

• Identify community events where MOTAC’s presence would be beneficial.
• Coordinate, staff, and/or arrange for coalition staffing at said community events.
• Receive and manage event staffing requests from grant partners.
• Organize and plan annual Champions for Tobacco-Free Living awards luncheon in conjunction with volunteers from the luncheon committee.
• Coordinate other events as determined by the coalition and/or needs of the workplan.
• Oversee and manage general coalition supplies and storage, including displays, pamphlets, promotional items, and other educational items

Public Relations

• Represent MOTAC, where appropriate, in media requests and community appearances.
• Assemble and distribute regular MOTAC electronic newsletter.
• Provide social media posts and content, as needed, for general coalition activities and commentary on relevant current events.
• Assemble and distribute annual report, highlighting activities and progress from the previous year.
• Seek out earned media opportunities for the coalition, connecting with partners and grassroots supporters to provide interviews and comments when needed.

General Duties

• Complete required quarterly and semiannual grant reports.
• Track coalition metrics and outcome progress.
• Work with MOTAC Board to design meeting agendas, facilitate meetings, take minutes, and/or manage Zoom meeting controls as needed.
• Other duties as needed or designated by the MOTAC Board.
