Meter Technician

Tri-County Electric Cooperative (TCEC)

POSITION PURPOSE

The Meter Technician installs, tests, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs electric metering equipment to ensure accurate billing, reliable electric service, and safe operation of the Cooperative's electric system. This position supports residential, commercial, and industrial metering, investigates metering and power quality concerns, performs distributed generation inspections, and maintains metering records.

Job Dimensions

  • Internal Responsibility – Collaborates with internal departments to ensure metering equipment is installed, maintained, tested, and documented accurately while supporting safe and reliable electric service.
  • External Responsibility – Serves as a field representative of the Cooperative by working directly with members and other external stakeholders to install, inspect, test, and troubleshoot metering equipment while providing exceptional member service and maintaining positive working relationships.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Regularly models multiple TCEC Essential Attributes as a regular pattern of behavior and self-awareness.
  • Solicits and offers feedback to peers and supervisor for both performance and behavior.
  • Performs metering work safely and in compliance with Cooperative safety policies, OSHA regulations, national electrical safety standards, and other applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards applicable to assigned duties.
  • Installs, removes, tests, programs, maintains, troubleshoots, and documents electric metering equipment in accordance with Cooperative standards, established procedures, and assigned responsibilities.
  • Ensures metering equipment accurately measures energy usage to support reliable electric service, accurate billing, revenue protection, and regulatory compliance.
  • Responds professionally to member inquiries, high bill investigations, power quality concerns, distributed generation inspections, and other metering-related requests while providing exceptional member service.
  • Performs metering inspections, testing, burden testing, current transformer and potential transformer work, power quality investigations, distributed generation inspections, and other technical responsibilities as assigned and as qualified through training, demonstrated competency, and progression within the Meter Technician career path.
  • Maintains accurate records, testing results, inventory, photographs, and required documentation utilizing Cooperative software systems and established business processes.
  • Collaborates effectively with internal departments to resolve metering issues, improve processes, and support reliable electric service.
  • Successfully completes and maintains required technical training, certifications, and job-related education necessary to perform assigned responsibilities and progress within the Meter Technician career path.
  • Available to work after normal business hours during emergency response situations as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education – A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Technical training in electrical systems, metering, electronics, instrumentation, linework, or a related field is preferred. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may substitute for formal education.
  • Experience – Previous experience in electric utility metering, linework, electrical construction or maintenance, instrumentation, or a related technical field is preferred but not required. Applicants will be placed into the appropriate Meter Technician level based on relevant experience, demonstrated competencies, certifications, and successful completion of the Cooperative's Meter Technician career progression requirements.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities – Ability to safely perform technical work involving electric metering equipment while complying with Cooperative safety policies, OSHA regulations, and other applicable standards. Must be able to interpret technical information, use computers and mobile technology to complete work and documentation, and provide professional service to members. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, operate Cooperative vehicles and equipment, climb, kneel, bend, lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and safely perform frequent physically demanding work. A valid driver's license is required, a Class A CDL is preferred.
