The purpose of this position is to maintain accurate meter records. This is accomplished by reading and maintaining meters and performing repairs on meters. Other duties may include customer service, installing and disconnecting meters, and interfacing with City employees and citizens. This position does not provide direction to other employees.

Examples of duties

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Monitors AMI system alerts and exceptions, including leak alerts, reverse flow, and no-read situations.
  • Performs field verification of AMI-generated alerts and resolves issues by repairing or replacing meters, MTU’s or communication components as needed.
  • Installs, programs, and tests AMI endpoints and communication modules to ensure accurate data transmission.
  • Utilize asset management system to complete assigned work orders.
  • Supports customer service by interpreting AMI consumption data, assisting customers with usage concerns, and explaining AMI system functions.
  • Identify and locate addresses for new meter installations.
  • Performs meter testing for accuracy using meter test bench according to AWWA standards.
  • Install meters in meter boxes and vaults. Installs meter boxes, including digging holes.
  • Maintains clean tools, equipment and jobsites.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

High School diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of relevant heavy machine operation work experience. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Special Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid Texas Class C vehicle license.

Supervision Exercised:

General Supervision: Work is normally reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and conformance to established standards; autonomy is granted at the service or program level; work is subject to general and departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines.

  • City, State, and Federal rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Meter reading systems, equipment, and operating procedures.
  • Diagnostics of equipment used in field testing.
  • Light and heavy equipment operations and maintenance.
  • Modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.

  • Establishing and maintaining working relationships with professional and support staff, vendors, the public, and City employees.
  • Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.
  • Providing outstanding customer service and conflict resolution.
  • Reading and interpreting gauges and other related instrumentation.
  • Reading and understanding City, State and Federal rules and regulations.
  • Working effectively in a high-pressure environment with changing priorities.
  • Effectively communicating orally.

Physical Demands / Work Environment: Ability to work outside, including in extreme temperatures, wetness, and humidity. Ability to stand and walk for long periods. Ability to lift, push, pull, reach, kneel, crouch, crawl, bend, twist, climb, and balance frequently. Ability to operate city or personal vehicle for business purposes.
