UAP collaborates with emerging and renowned artists, architects, developers, and designers; to deliver creative outcomes for the public realm. We engage in all aspects of the delivery process from curatorial services and design development, through to fabrication and installation.

Position Objective

The Metal Finishing | Artisan is a skilled craftsperson responsible for carrying out intermediate-level finishing work on cast metal sculptures. This role involves independent execution of grinding, chasing, sanding, polishing, and detailing tasks, as well as preparing surfaces for patina and final presentation. The Metal Finishing | Artisan ensures quality craftsmanship while supporting apprentices’ learning and collaborating with Finishing Experts to achieve the artist’s intended vision.

Technical Skills

  • Perform intermediate finishing tasks including grinding, filing, chasing, sanding, polishing, and surface texturing.
  • Restore cast surfaces by removing imperfections and enhancing detail.
  • Prepare sculptures for patination by achieving consistent, refined surface finishes.
  • Work independently on assigned projects while collaborating with team members to meet production goals.
  • Assist in problem-solving and troubleshooting technical challenges in finishing.
  • Provide informal guidance and demonstrate techniques to apprentices.
  • Safely operate hand tools, grinders, pneumatic tools, and other finishing equipment.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and workspaces in clean and safe condition.
  • Participate in installation, handling, and staging of artwork when required.
  • Communicate with supervisors and Project Leads to ensure adherence to project specifications and timelines.

Requirements

  • 2–5 years of experience in finishing, metalworking, sculpture, or related craft; prior art foundry experience strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in basic and intermediate finishing techniques, with growing ability in advanced methods.
  • Must have welding experience both MIG and TIG
  • Strong understanding of surface refinement and its role in artistic presentation.
  • Ability to interpret and execute from technical drawings, artist notes, or verbal direction.
  • Competence in safe handling of tools, materials, and heavy artworks.
  • Physical ability to perform repetitive finishing tasks, lift materials, and work in shop conditions.

Physical Requirements

  • Industrial workshop environment with exposure to fumes, dust, and chemicals.
  • Must be able to wear a respirator and other required personal protective equipment (PPE) for extended periods, including respirators, gloves, and protective gear.
  • Must be able to stand, bend, stoop, reach, and crouch for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Frequent use of hands and arms for use of handling tools and materials.
  • Must have good hand–eye coordination and manual dexterity for detailed work.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and maintain awkward positions for short periods.
  • Must be able to go up and down ladders and work with power tools while on ladder.
  • Tolerance to working in environments with strong odors, fumes, and varying temperatures (with proper protective equipment provided).
  • Visual acuity to detect color variations, finish flaws, and surface imperfections.
  • Hearing ability to perceive safety signals, equipment sounds, and verbal instructions.
