The Metadata Manager plays a critical role in enforcing Data Governance policies that oversee the business information life cycle, supporting value creation, cost efficiency, service quality, and risk management goals. This role drives data governance strategy by partnering directly with senior management, lines of business, and technology teams to ensure consistent understanding and stewardship of our data assets.

The Metadata Manager collaborates with Data Management team partners to promote awareness, standards, and cooperation across the organization. As a subject matter expert in metadata and data management best practices, this individual ensures that metadata is managed in accordance with Covetrus policies and standards, remains fit for its intended purposes, and continuously evolves to meet the company's growing needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Facilitate the creation of, maintain, communicate, and govern metadata standards — including business definitions, data quality rules, lineage, and business ownership.
  • Enforce metadata standards and policies through technology, governed processes, and interpersonal coaching and influence.
  • Design and develop scalable, efficient, and secure metadata frameworks that store, organize, and communicate metadata across the organization; leverage deep expertise in metadata technologies to ensure system integrity.
  • Monitor metadata system performance, proactively diagnose and troubleshoot issues, and implement optimizations to ensure reliable operations.
  • Process, enrich, and integrate metadata from diverse sources to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency across the data landscape.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams — including data scientists, analysts, engineers, and business stakeholders — to ensure metadata systems meet organizational requirements and support strategic goals.
  • Identify key data management risks and ensure business compliance with data-related policies, strategies, and standards.
  • Partner with Data Stewards across domains to coordinate and align metadata standards organization-wide.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or a related field, plus a minimum of 5 years of progressive data governance and/or data management experience.
  • In lieu of a degree, a combined 9 years of higher education and/or relevant work experience, including at least 5 years in data governance or data management.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) Preferred

COMPETENCIES (SKILLS AND ABILITIES)

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex data concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proficiency in metadata management technologies, including metadata management software and databases.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to derive patterns and insights from large, complex data sets.
  • Proficient in SQL; familiarity with data cataloging and lineage tools is a plus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to work independently and assertively in a collaborative environment.
