As a student in an approved registered nurse or practical nurse school of nursing, the Nurse Extern student participates in clinical work under the direction of an RN. The Nurse Extern assists in the individualized care of the patient to achieve the patient’s highest level of wellness working cooperatively with others as part of the healthcare team and performs designated clinical procedures and nonclinical support tasks within the nurse extern scope.

Nurse Externship – Mercy St. Louis Hospital (Winter 2026–2027)

Are you a nursing student looking to gain hands-on clinical experience during your winter break? The Mercy St. Louis Hospital Nurse Externship offers a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world nursing practice.

As a paid Nurse Extern, you will work approximately 36 hours per week alongside experienced Mercy nurses, rotating through a variety of acute care units and gaining valuable clinical exposure.

Program Dates

Winter Externship: December 21, 2026 – January 15, 2027

Designed to align with your winter break schedule.

  • Build confidence in providing both direct and indirect patient care
  • Strengthen your clinical skills through one-on-one preceptor support

Clinical Skills Exposure Includes

  • IV therapy
  • Foley catheter care
  • NG tube care and tube feeding
  • Ostomy care
  • Point-of-care testing
  • Phlebotomy and specimen collection
  • Simple dressing changes
  • Head-to-toe assessments
  • Tracheostomy care

Eligibility Requirements

To be considered, applicants must have:

  • Completed at least two semesters of nursing school by the start of the externship
  • Completed at least one clinical rotation
