The Department of Mental Health (DMH) is seeking dynamic candidates to fill the role of Mental Health Worker II at the Fenwood Inn. The Fenwood Inn is a 40-bed homeless shelter for individuals with mental illness. This position provides programmatic direct care services to clients, assists in the implementation of habilitative/rehabilitative, behavioral and recreational programs, performs client related housekeeping duties, maintains client related records, and provides leisure activities to clients.

Mental Health Workers treat all residents of the Fenwood Inn with dignity and respect through interactions which affirm the individual’s needs and preferences and by optimally integrating their perspective into all facets of care.

Please Note: This position is 40 hours per week, 2nd shift (evening). Hours: Sunday and Monday 3:30pm to 12am, Tuesday 3:45pm to 12:15am, Wednesday 3:30pm to 12am, Thursday and Friday OFF, Saturday 3:30pm to 12am. Employees in this position will be required to perform mandatory overtime.

Duties and Responsibilities (these are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • At the beginning of each shift, staff person is assigned to specific client rooms to assist clients in organizing their space, completing their ADL’s, problem-solving, and communicating with other clients and staff.
  • Assists in intake duties for new clients, including welcoming clients, searching belongings, orienting them to the milieu, etc.
  • Plans, assigns and coordinates client schedules and services.
  • Provides programmatic direct care services in the skills of daily living by instructing and/or assisting clients in feeding, bathing, toileting, dressing, clothing, maintenance, oral and physical hygiene, self-preservation, etc., to ensure that the daily needs and the human rights of the clients are met.
  • Assists in the implementation of habilitative/rehabilitative behavioral and recreational programs, communicating to team about observations regarding client behavior, needs, desires or problems.
  • Provides assistance in office-related tasks such as copying, filing, etc.

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the English language and able to apply and explain the laws, rules, regulations, guidelines and policies governing assigned unit activities
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions and write clearly, and concisely, expressing thoughts succinctly and developing ideas in a logical sequence
  • Skilled at verbal communication and gathering information through observing and engaging individuals in discussion
  • Adept at establishing rapport with people who are under physical and emotional stress and dealing tactfully with persons from varied ethnic, cultural and economic backgrounds
  • Capacity to work in a team setting and in group situations
  • Maintains accurate records and able to gather information by examining records and documents
  • Able to lift and carry heavy objects or persons

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have (A) at least one (1) year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in providing direct care services to individuals with a mental illness or physical disabilities or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitution below.

Incumbents may be required to have a current and valid motor vehicle driver’s license at a class level specific to assignment.

Based on assignment: Incumbents are required upon successful completion of a training program to obtain and maintain one or more of the following certifications: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), first aid, and Medication Administration Program (MAP) certification.

Substitutions:

I. An Associate’s degree or higher in psychology, human services or a closely related field may be substituted for the required experience.

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate’s years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division’s Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
