24The Mental Health Technician (MHT), functioning under the direction of the Registered Nurse or Licensed Mental Health Clinician is responsible for the direct care of mental health patients based on established standards and licensure guidelines. The MHT is responsible for knowledge and modeling of Dayton Children’s values through effective interaction with patients, families, and treatment team members while providing excellent care.
The Mental Health Technician (MHT) is responsible for performing supportive, trauma-informed care to patients/families. Responsibilities include the provision of a safe and therapeutic milieu, completion of routine safety checks and constant attendance on patients as ordered, ensuring patient safety and adherence to treatment plans. The MHT demonstrates strong therapeutic communication skills, accepts delegated tasks, and possesses the knowledge and understanding to ask pertinent questions and report patient information as indicated, including behavioral changes and mental status updates. Appropriately handles sensitive patient information, understanding and upholding of strict confidentiality and privacy guidelines.
Responsibilities also include assistance with activities of daily living, appropriate documentation, and collaboration with the treatment team. The MHT can function as the unit clerk and/or support coordinator, responsible for supporting the team lead in clerical duties and daily operations of the unit. Complies with the safety management program designed to provide a secure and therapeutic physical environment, free of hazards and to reduce the risk of injury, including de-escalation techniques. Is knowledgeable about and responsive to the mission of the hospital and the specific goals of the mental health unit. The MHT promotes a patient and family-centered, trauma-informed environment, and acts as a change agent to meet the rapidly changing census and needs of all customers—both internal and external—within the mental health setting.
