Glimpse of the Job

The Mental Health Clinician, under general supervision, is responsible for providing mental health counseling and outreach that is responsive to the unique backgrounds and needs of individuals, couples, and groups. This position may provide supervision for clinical staff and graduate trainees in counseling or mental health care. This role supports the mission of University Health Services by fostering the mental well-being and holistic development of Texas A&M students.

Qualifications
Required Education & Experience:

  • Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, or other degree acceptable to the Texas State Board of Examiners for Professional Counselors, Social Workers, or Marriage and Family Therapists.

  • LPCs: A minimum of 3,000 post-licensure clinical hours completed in no fewer than 18 months under supervision.

  • LMFTs: A minimum of 3,000 post-licensure clinical hours completed in no fewer than 24 months, including at least 200 hours of supervision.

  • LCSWs: At least one year of supervised clinical experience with a minimum of 100 supervision hours.

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).

  • Licensed in the State of Texas within one year of employment.

  • Must maintain licensure for continued employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a University or College counseling center.

  • Experience with crisis intervention and risk assessment.

  • Experience in providing outreach and mental health education.

  • Experience supervising clinical trainees or licensed associate clinicians.

  • Ability to provide clinical counseling in more than one language utilized by A&M students.

  • Training in evidence-based practices and/or related areas of specialization.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to work as a generalist who serves all student presenting concerns.

  • Demonstrated experience working with individuals that are representative of our TAMU counseling center clients.

  • Clinical experience providing multiculturally informed counseling, consultation, crisis intervention, campus engagement, program coordination/development, training and supervision.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively in a multidisciplinary team environment.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Adherence to the Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct for the relevant Texas State Licensing Board, the code of ethics relevant to their field, and all relevant federal and state laws.

Responsibilities

Clinical Services & Supervision Provided:

  • Provides mental health counseling as well as crisis intervention to individuals, couples, and groups.

  • Assesses clients, creates care plans, and provides treatment services and referrals.

  • Engages in case management and referrals.

  • Delivers mental health related outreach, presentations, workshops to students, faculty, and staff.

  • Provides consultation to faculty, staff, students, and families regarding students’ mental health and well-being.

  • Provides adjunct supervision of psychology.

Departmental Needs:

  • At times of high student need, flexes schedule to provide additional clinical services including appointments, outreach, crisis, and other duties as needed.

  • Participates in departmental, division and university committees, meetings and special initiatives.

  • Assists with organizational and administrative tasks, as requested.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Administrative Duties:

  • Meets ethical obligations for timely documentation of counseling services per State of Texas licensure requirements and University Health Services policies.

  • Provides adjunct support and/or training seminars for trainees.

  • Supports clinical operations through organizational and administrative tasks related to client care.

Consultation Received:

  • Consults with licensed professionals when managing complex and/or crisis situations.

  • Seeks appropriate consultation to best support students.

Professional Development:

  • Per state licensure requirements, participates in continuing education and professional development activities related to the performance of job functions, emerging trends in college mental health and maintenance of skills in one’s professional specialty area.

  • Maintains currency of practice through professional literature review, organizational research and evaluation activities, and shares with peers. Provides professional presentations as appropriate.

  • This position may require a flexible schedule for evening and weekend work for outreach and/or crisis response.

  • This position may direct and/or evaluate the work of others.

  • The individual in this position may be required to handle Personally Identifiable Information1 (PII) as defined by Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations and Protected Health Information2 (PHI) as defined by Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations. The individual is required to handle PII and PHI in accordance with University Health Services (UHS), Texas A&M University System policies, and all applicable federal regulations.
    o 1PII includes information that can be used to distinguish or trace an individual’s identity, either alone or when combined with other personal or identifying information.
    o 2PHI refers to any health information that can be linked to a specific individual and is protected under federal privacy regulations.

  • FERPA and HIPAA training are required upon employment and must be completed on a recurring basis as determined by policy and job duties.
