Mental Health and Homelessness Counsellor

About the Role
As our Mental Health and Homelessness Counsellor, you will provide structured and informal counselling support using trauma-informed, recovery-oriented and person-centred approaches. You'll build trusting therapeutic relationships while empowering residents to develop coping strategies, strengthen resilience and achieve their recovery goals.
Working closely with Registered Nurses, care staff, lifestyle teams and external services, you'll contribute to holistic care planning and help create a safe, inclusive and supportive environment.
What You'll Be Doing
• Provide individual counselling and emotional support within your scope of practice.
• Complete psychosocial assessments and develop recovery-focused support plans.
• Support residents experiencing mental health challenges, homelessness, social isolation and adjustment difficulties.
• Recognise deterioration in mental health and respond appropriately to crisis situations, including suicide and self-harm risk.
• Apply de-escalation strategies and supportive communication during times of distress.
• Facilitate engaging wellbeing groups including:

◦ Anxiety management
◦ Emotional wellbeing
◦ Coping skills
◦ Recovery-focused programs
◦ Social connection activities
• Advocate for residents accessing housing, health, financial and community services.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support resident outcomes.
• Maintain accurate documentation, case notes and electronic records (iCare).
• Promote dignity, independence, choice and meaningful participation in everyday life.
About You
You're passionate about supporting people experiencing vulnerability and believe in treating every individual with compassion, respect and dignity.
You'll bring:

• Strong conflict resolution and de-escalation skills.
• Experience working with people experiencing mental health challenges, homelessness or other complex needs.

• Sound judgement, professionalism and ethical decision-making.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
• Certificate IV or Diploma in Mental Health, Counselling, Community Services or equivalent.
• Experience supporting people experiencing mental health challenges, homelessness or vulnerability.
• Knowledge of trauma-informed and recovery-oriented practice.
• Strong documentation and case management skills.
• Understanding of privacy, confidentiality, duty of care, incident reporting and WHS requirements.
Desirable
• Experience in residential, supported accommodation, aged care or community settings.
• Mental Health First Aid (or willingness to obtain).
• Current First Aid and CPR.
• Current Australian Driver's Licence and/or LR Bus Licence.
