
General Position Summary & Responsibilities
The Melt Shop Superintendent is responsible for leading melt shop operations to ensure the safe, timely, efficient, and cost-effective production of quality steel products. This position coordinates and schedules department operations with Sales and other operational departments to meet production objectives, maintain product quality, and support overall mill performance. The role requires strong technical knowledge of steelmaking processes, equipment, and technologies, including electric arc furnace (EAF), basic oxygen furnace (BOF), caster operations, refractories, melt shop equipment, and related mill operations.
This role sets and communicates departmental goals for production, efficiency, quality, safety, and continuous improvement; manages the department budget; evaluates long- and short-term capital needs; monitors departmental purchases and expenditures; and oversees multiple projects and priorities to ensure efficiency, timeliness, and follow-through. The Melt Shop Superintendent maintains close working relationships with Sales, the rolling mill, the lab, the yard, administration, and other departments; assists with resolving mill issues; supports long-term planning; and promotes a culture of safety, accountability, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.

Salary Range: $195,000 - $220,000 annually

Internal Control Responsibilities
Supports Internal Control process which includes understanding, communicating, and complying with defined internal controls as well as suggesting and making modifications to the policies, procedures, and controls to better match the business.
Communicates upward problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.
Interpersonal Contacts
The Melt Shop Superintendent has frequent interaction with internal teams and operational partners to coordinate production, support safety and quality objectives, resolve mill issues, and ensure effective department performance. Key contacts include Sales, rolling mill personnel, yard personnel, administration personnel, other operational departments, union and non-union employees, department leadership, and company management involved in projects, budgeting, staffing, long-term planning, compliance, and internal controls.
Interactions require strong written and oral communication, sound judgment, confidentiality, collaboration, problem-solving, negotiation, and the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across departments. The role also communicates upward regarding operational issues, policy or code of conduct concerns, safety matters, and other business needs.
Job Conditions
Work is typically performed in a variety of environments including indoors, outdoors or in an industrial manufacturing setting. Temperatures can also reach extremes depending on weather and production. A worker in this position will often be subject to outdoor environmental conditions such as snow, rain, heat and/or plant conditions such as dust/dirt, noise and temperature extremes while performing job duties. PPE is required and will be provided to you by the company.

Ability to: push, pull, or lift items within the manufacturing plant or outdoors continually, using lifting devices for items over 50 pounds; push or pull up to 50 pounds and lift or carry up to 20 pounds; climb stairs frequently on a daily basis; stoop, kneel, or crouch frequently to pick up parts or equipment; stand and walk continually, both within the manufacturing plant and outdoors; reach frequently to retrieve supplies, parts, and equipment; grasp continually to gather supplies or to compile and assemble paperwork; perform repetitive motions of the hands, wrists, and fingers frequently to enter or retrieve data from the computer or to use tools, supplies, and equipment in manufacturing; and sit rarely.
