The University of Arizona is seeking a competent, safety-oriented Medium Voltage Shop Lead to be part of our electrical utilities and distribution team. In this lead position, you will remain hands-on with medium voltage equipment while providing technical leadership to other technicians, serving as a key point of contact for electrical distribution tasks across campus. You will help ensure that U of A's electrical infrastructure remains reliable, safe, and well maintained to support academics, research, residential, and medical facilities.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Perform
  hands-on installation, testing, maintenance, inspection, calibration,
  and repair of medium voltage equipment including transformers,
  PMS, circuit breakers, relays, batteries, and chargers.
• Conduct regular
  inspections, oil sampling, power quality assessments; recommend
  improvements or preventive maintenance actions.
• Read,
  interpret, draw, and work from electrical schematics (one-line, three-line
  diagrams) and system map books.
• Be a technical
  resource / mentor to other technicians: assist in guiding work, enforcing safe
  work practices, helping with training and troubleshooting.
• Document work,
  maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, maintenance, and share
  findings with Supervisors.
• Coordinate with
  facilities management and engineering for scheduled outages, upgrades, and
  emergency repairs.
• Assist with
  developing job hazard analyses (JHAs) and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
• Track
  completion of inspections and report deficiencies to the supervisor.
• Act as the shop’s
  shield representative when supervisors are unavailable (liaison with
  contractors, engineers, or campus departments).
• Provide
  feedback to the supervisor on crew performance, training needs, and resource
  requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• An
  understanding of substation design and infrastructure, distribution power and
  an understanding of the equipment within the system.
• Ability to
  write and speak to project specific knowledge, estimating, plan review, excel, Smartsheet,
  electrical theory.
• Ability to walk
  jobsites, including tunnels, substations, gear houses, and electrical rooms (OSHA, NFPA 7OE).
• Solid ability
  to interpret, read, and work from electrical schematics (one-line/three-line),
  system maps, etc.
• Skilled in operating, troubleshooting, and working around energized equipment and knowledge of applicable safety codes and practices.
• Strong
  technical skills with medium voltage systems; competent in troubleshooting,
  preventative maintenance.
• Good
  communication and teamwork skills; ability to guide others, help mentor less
  experienced staff.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
• Minimum of seven years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy

Preferred Qualifications

• Five years of electrical construction experience.
• Five years of distribution power experience.
• Five years of plan review or blueprint reading experience.
• Understanding of the University of Arizona electrical system, mainly 46kV and 13.BkV.
• Experience with controls in medium voltage substation and understanding of one-line and three-line diagrams.
• Completion of a Journeyman Apprenticeship Program or at least four years of experience in medium voltage/substation/electrical distribution work.

Notice of Availability of the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report
In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act (Clery Act), each year the University of Arizona releases an Annual Security Report (ASR) for each of the University’s campuses. These reports disclose information including Clery crime statistics for the previous three calendar years and policies, procedures, and programs the University uses to keep students and employees safe, including how to report crimes or other emergencies and resources for crime victims. As a campus with residential housing facilities, the Main Campus ASR also includes a combined Annual Fire Safety report with information on fire statistics and fire safety systems, policies, and procedures.
