The Department of the Medical Examiner is seeking to fill a Medicolegal Investigator I position in Honolulu. As a Medicolegal Investigator I, you will play a vital role in investigating deaths that are accidental, unexplained, or unattended, helping to uncover the facts and provide answers to families and the community. This entry-level position is perfect for someone eager to learn and grow in a hands-on investigative environment.

What You Will Do:

  • Assist with medicolegal investigations of deaths by gathering evidence, obtaining records, interviewing witnesses, and documenting investigative findings.
  • Assist with identifying decedents and notifying next of kin, while providing information and support to families and coordinating with funeral homes, hospitals, law enforcement, and other agencies.
  • Manage case information, reports, evidence, and decedent property, ensuring accurate documentation, proper safeguarding, and authorized disposition.
  • Review death-related information and questionable causes or manners of death to assist in determining whether further investigation is warranted.
  • Participate in emergency operations, disaster response, and mass-fatality incidents, while maintaining required training and professional relationships with families and community partners.
Special Working Conditions:
  • Provides 24-hour coverage and may be required to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, and respond to emergency call-outs.
  • Works in environments that may involve exposure to contagious diseases, bloodborne pathogens, bodily fluids, and hazardous chemicals while using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Regularly encounters deceased individuals in various stages of decomposition and may be exposed to unpleasant odors, insects, and other conditions associated with medicolegal investigations.
  • Responds to death scenes in a variety of locations, including homes, hospitals, highways, industrial sites, fire scenes, and remote or difficult-to-access terrain, where hazardous conditions may exist.
  • Performs physically demanding work, including prolonged standing, walking over uneven terrain, climbing, bending, and lifting or moving items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Career Progression
The expectation for any Medicolegal Investigator Iin the Department of the Medical Examiner is to learn and progress upward to higher Medicolegal Investigator levels. A Medicolegal Investigator may progress up the career ladder and/or qualify for other higher level positions with satisfactory work experience and demonstration of applicable knowledge and skills.

Qualifications

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

Equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited four year college or university with a bachelor's degree in forensic science, biological science, nursing, allied health, criminal justice, or a directly related field.

Substitution

LICENSE REQUIREMENT

Current, valid appropriate driver's license (Type 3/automobile), prior to appointment.
