Classification Minimum Requirements:

Licensed as a Medical Laboratory Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist in one of the specialty areas to which the position is allocated and two years of appropriate experience.


Job Description:

Perform molecular testing in a clinical lab, including oncology testing (targeted gene profiling, fusion detection, microarrays, fragment size analysis, etc), pharmacogenomics testing (SNP genotyping, copy number analysis), and infectious disease testing. Primary duties will consist of high-throughput testing in clinical service. In addition, the incumbent will manage and execute laboratory work required for the successful completion of translational research projects. The incumbent may also train visiting/junior staff, including students and residents.

In conjunction with the Medical Technologist Supervisor, this position will participate in the development and implementation of new clinical molecular diagnostic testing procedures and clinical trial tests. Core activities will include protocol development utilizing various platforms including Illumina sequencers, ABI 3500 Genetic Analyzer, QuantStudio Real-Time PCR systems, Hologic Panther Systems, and various types of robotics from Hamilton, Perkin Elmer, and Qiagen, as well as data analysis using a variety of commercial and in-house developed software. Methodologies and applications include next-generation sequencing (NGS), RNAseq, microarrays, real-time qPCR, TMA, Nucleic Acid Extractions, and more.

Participate in the overall maintenance of the laboratory. Purchase supplies, maintain instruments and equipment, and comply with all laboratory policies and procedures.

Responsible for all routine documentation associated with the performance of laboratory testing, including reporting results and all quality control documentation.

Participate with other technologists in the development of tests as defined by the laboratory director. Recommend updates and changes to laboratory procedure manuals. Attend laboratory meetings and communicate with other departments.

Actively participate in the interfacing of automated instrumentation with the laboratory information system (LIS) and be involved in LIS-associated tasks such as test builds and dictionary maintenance


Expected Salary:

Starting salary is between $35.00 - $37.00 per hour


Required Qualifications:

  • Two years of appropriate experience
  • Certification as MB (ASCP) or MT (AAB) Molecular Diagnostics examination or CHT (ABHI) or MDT (AMT)
  • Licensed as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist in Molecular Pathology


Preferred:

The position requires clinical diagnostic experience and/or hands-on research experience in advanced molecular diagnostic techniques – particularly nucleic acid extractions, real-time PCR, DNA sequencing, and next-generation sequencing– and their associated instrument platforms. Prefer a candidate with some experience in a clinical molecular diagnostic laboratory environment who is familiar with the compliance regulations that govern such labs. Excellent organizational, communication, informatics, and teamwork skills/experience is advantageous.
