Hiring Range:

$31.41 - $51.51

(based on a full time schedule of 40 hours per week).

Please note that the final offer will vary based on scheduled hours. Compensation for part-time or reduced schedules will be prorated based on scheduled weekly hours, experience, skills, qualifications, and internal equity considerations.

Under the general supervision of the area Section Heads and Laboratory Supervisor and according to established policies and procedures performs a variety of laboratory tests and reports data for the use in diagnosis and treatment of patients. May perform procedures across the major areas of the laboratory or concentrate in one area such as Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology or Microbiology. No supervision is required for specimen processing or reporting of patient test results.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Performs a variety of laboratory tests and reports data for the use in diagnosis and treatment of patients.
  • Performs testing accurately and completely following Policies & Procedures in the Hematology II Section. Performs coagulation testing, urinalysis, rapid strep, Sofia flu, Strep. Pneumoniae, Legionella Ag, wet prep., HCG qualitative and OCC blood testing and all other HEM II tasks.
  • Ensures that test results correlate properly and takes appropriate follow-up action for all questionable results.
  • Ensures the proper working order of all equipment and that there are adequate supplies and reagents for use. Restocks work bench.
  • Processes specimens as outlined in Specimen Collection manual.
  • Operates and maintains instrumentation. Fills out all maintenance, daily temperature and other appropriate logs.
  • Performs appropriate start-up procedures at the beginning of each shift.
  • Promptly and accurately performs assigned procedures and conducts routine quality control, calibrations and instrument checks. Takes appropriate follow-up action, as needed.
  • Demonstrates autonomy, initiative, professionalism and an ability and willingness to problem-solve.
  • May perform procedures across the major areas of the laboratory or concentrate in one area such as Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology or Microbiology.
  • Performs testing accurately and completely following Policies & Procedures in the Chemistry I Section. Operates the AU680, AU480, and Access2 instruments and all other CHEM I duties.
  • Performs testing accurately and completely following Policies & Procedures in the Chemistry II Section. Operates the Triage meter, creates manifests and site batches for send-out testing and all other CHEM II tasks.
  • No supervision is required for specimen processing or reporting of patient test results.

Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or successful completion of an accredited four-year school of Medical Technology.

Preferred:

  • ASCP certification as an MT is preferred.

Experience/Skills:

Required:

  • Three years of related experience.

Preferred:

  • LIS experience a plus.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

  • Must Qualify as a General Supervisor under the CLIA regulations for high-complexity testing under 42 CFR 493.1461 with either a bachelor's degree in chemical, biological, or clinical laboratory sciences or medical technology from an accredited institution, PLUS 1 year of laboratory training or experience in high complexity testing.
  • Also acceptable is an associate degree in a laboratory science or MLT from an accredited institution, with at least 2 years of laboratory training/experience in high complexity testing. Performs low, moderate and/or high complexity testing as required.
  • Performs all testing and work assignments with a positive sense of urgency meeting all established turnaround times and deadlines.
  • Follows established Hematology, Chemistry, and Blood Bank protocols perform tests including the most complex for an assigned area and prepares component blood products for transfusion.
  • Provides guidance and consultation to lower-level technologists, technicians and others in the interpretation of complex or unusual test results and in the performance of standard operating Blood Bank procedures.
  • Processes blood donor specimens for outside shipment and testing. Sends specimens and blood products between campuses and various sites using appropriate packaging and transport methods.
  • Performs assigned duties to ensure an adequate inventory of supplies for the assigned area. Monitors inventory levels and stores equipment and supplies in a neat and orderly manner. Utilizes first-in/first-out (FIFO) inventory management practices.
  • Rotates to Marlboro Campus Lab- Medical Center Troubleshoots testing process discrepancies.
  • Travel between Marlborough and Nashoba/Groton as scheduled to provide operational, administrative, or departmental support
  • The float requirements only apply to UMass Memorial Nashoba Valley's newly hired staff
