Gateways Hospital and Mental Health Center, located in Los Angeles, is a non-profit organization that provides an array of comprehensive mental health services for Children, Adolescents, Transitional Aged Youth, and Adults suffering from mental illness in the Greater Los Angeles area. The organization consists of a standalone fifty-five (55) )-bed hospital and six outlying outpatient facilities that have anywhere from fourteen (14) beds to one hundred and thirty-four (134) beds. The organization has approximately four hundred (400) employees.
SUMMARY OF POSITION
The Medical Services Manager at Percy Village is responsible for planning and coordinating the activities of the medication room. They are expected to oversee all medication room personnel and collaborate with other disciplines and departments to maintain safety and quality.
ESSENTIALS DUTIES
- Administers personal care, medications, treatments, and other nursing procedures to selected clients as authorized by Hospital policy, RN License, and Standards of Practice.
- Supervises, encourages, and teaches the client personal hygiene and dietary needs as well as medication actions and reactions.
- Monitors and ensures clients take prescribed psychotropic medications and records medications accurately.
- Provides on call coverage for emergency consultation and intervention outside of regular work hours
- Assists in situational crisis intervention as needed.
- Participates in treatment team meetings, in–service training, and other meetings as scheduled.
- Assists professional staff in arranging emergency transportation for psychiatric and medical emergencies.
- Provides 24 hours on-call coverage for emergency consultation and intervention outside of regular work hours.
- Reports safety hazards, maintenance, and housekeeping requirements to the Residential Manager.
- Leads clients education groups, provides individual client psych-education and completes billing as directed.
- Orders, receives and stocks Medication Room supplies.
- Responds appropriately to emergency situations; i.e., notifies staff administration, police, fire department, ambulance and paramedics, as appropriate.
- Provides administrative supervision to the Medication Technicians.
- Formally reviews and appraises the performance of subordinates annually.
- Conducts and monitors orientation for newly hired Medication Technician staff.
- Assists in personnel actions, such as recruitment, evaluations and discipline.
- Originates, updates, and alters Medication Technician schedules as appropriate.
- Covers Medication Technician shifts as necessary.
- Plans Psychiatrist and Medical Clinic schedules and executes as necessary.
- Maintains logs for annual and monthly client documentation requirements.
- Administers and documents all staff and client TB tests, maintains due date log.
- Seeks learning opportunities to gain new knowledge/skills which result in continuous quality improvement.
- Seeks appropriate guidance from immediate supervisor to achieve expected outcomes.
- Maintains a competence in all clinical skills necessary for performance of duties.
- Maintains competence in interpersonal skills necessary to direct and supervise ancillary staff.
- Establishes channels of communication that promote unit and interdepartmental collaboration and problem solving.
- Uses written communication effectively to document in accordance with all regulatory agency and hospital requirements.
- Demonstrate active listening skills that encourage open communication with staff, clients and families.
- Contributes to a positive therapeutic milieu by action and responsible communication with coworkers, supervisors and administration on any issue of concern relevant to job responsibilities and the agency.
- Responsible for policy, procedure and safety suggestions to the Program Director, Operations Administrator and  Residential Manager
- Observes and promptly reports changes in clients’ conditions and behavior to the Program Director, Treatment Team and Psychiatrist.
- Completes DMH, and agency documentation per specified guidelines.
- Performs other additional related tasks as assigned
- Oversees assigned staff and holds them accountable for accuracy in performing all client care and shift assignments.
- Delegates shift responsibilities to licensed/unlicensed assistive personnel.
- Coordinates with treatment teams on clients’ goals and objectives.
- Holds meetings with team members to discuss shift activities and client care planning.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS
- Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.
- Proven ability to work with adult clients.
- Operate selected equipment.
- Possesses knowledge of current trends in psychiatric client care, management theories, nursing acuities and therapeutic milieu, Client Rights, DMH, and Title 22 AOA requirements.
- High degree of inter-personal skills, communication, and leadership, along with management skills in nursing, including organizing and staffing P.A.’s, M.H.A’s, Medication Technicians and  L.V.N.’s.
- Understanding of individual, group, and family psychotherapy. Basic physical assessment skills and analytical data review.

QualificationsEDUCATION & CERTIFICATES
- Associate Degree in Nursing
EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS
- Two (2) years experience as a charge nurse in an acute hospital setting
- Psychiatric nursing experience

REQUIREMENTS
- Must pass Department of Justice (DOJ), Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), and Community Care Licensing (CCL) background clearance.
- Valid California Driver’s license.
- TB clearance.
- Driving record acceptable for coverage by Gateways insurance carrier.
