To report to the Laboratory Manager and Chief Medical Scientist in the Near Patient Testing Department. However, the chosen candidate may be required to report on a day to day basis to the designated Senior Medical Scientist.
To observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient or Hospital information.
To comply with GDPR at all times.
Ensure, in co-operation with the Consultant in Charge/Chief Medical Scientist/designated Senior Staff, appropriate compliance with International and National Guidelines and Standards for the provision of the Near Patient Testing Service and actively participate in internal and external Quality Control.
In co-operation with the Consultant Heads of Department, Laboratory Manager, Chief Medical Scientist, and other designated senior staff, participate in the introduction of new ideas and methods according to hospital/laboratory policies.
To cooperate with and support all project work undertaken in the Laboratory Directorate.
To participate in training and retraining staff (new and existing) and students as required. Assist with the delivery of end user training- including induction for interns/ SHOs/ NCHDs as required.
To actively participate in and promote continuing education and research activities consistent with the post.
To actively participate in the Department's commitment to Accreditation through compliance with ISO15189.
Participate in implementing a service that supports the clinical needs of patients and is consistent with the mission, vision, values and strategic plans for the hospital.
To co-operate in evaluating equipment, consumables and research projects.
To participate in ensuring that effective safety procedures are in place to comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act and to assist and co-operate with the Laboratory Management team in developing procedures to be followed in preventing and managing accidents occurring in the work area.
Assist with equipment and connectivity troubleshooting as and when required.
Drafting documents, forms, instructions on the laboratories document control system.
Documenting non-conformances and corrective actions on the laboratories quality management system.
Report all anomalies, near misses, non-conformances, incorrect results immediately to appropriate senior staff.
Evaluate and batch accept reagents, consumables, equipment as required.
Participate in departmental meetings
To perform such other duties appropriate to the office as may be assigned to him/her by an officer designated by the Board in consultation with the Consultant in Charge/Chief Medical Scientist/Laboratory Manager or their designated deputy.
To contribute to the provision of a high-quality patient focused service.
To perform technical procedures to the highest professional standard as determined by the Consultant in Charge /Chief Medical Scientist.
To assist in implementing measures for Safety, Health and Welfare to all staff.
To assist in providing statistical and management information regards departmental workloads, equipment/ assay verifications etc, when requested.
To attend courses and meetings as appropriate to maintain up-to-date knowledge.
To fulfil CPD requirements.

1 PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, ETC.
(a) Candidates for appointment must possess:
(i) Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Medical Science from the Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT).
Or
(ii) Bachelor of Science (Honours) Biomedical Science, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT).
Or
(iii) Bachelor in Science Honours degree in Biomedical Science from the Joint University College Cork – Cork Institute of Technology course
AND
Diploma in Clinical Laboratory Practice.
Or
(iv) Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) or Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT)
AND
Bachelor in Science (Applied Science) Honours degree (Biomedical option) from the University of Dublin/Dublin Institute of Technology (Awarded prior to 2002).
Or
(v) Bachelor of Biomedical Science, Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) AND BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences, University College Cork (UCC). (Awarded prior to 2013).
Or
(vi) Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences of the Dublin Institute of Technology, (DIT) or the Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) (Awarded prior to 1994).
Or
(vii) Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science awarded before 1997 by Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) or Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT).
Or
(viii) An equivalent qualification validated by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM) and or CORU Registered.
And
(b) Candidates must have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and professional ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office
