Job Description

Job Title: Internal Medicine Resident

Department: Internal Medicine / Graduate Medical Education
Reports To: Program Director, Internal Medicine Residency Program

The Internal Medicine Resident is responsible for providing comprehensive patient care under the supervision of attending physicians while participating in an accredited Internal Medicine Residency Program. The resident evaluates, diagnoses, and manages adult patients across inpatient and outpatient settings while developing clinical competency in accordance with program, hospital, and accreditation standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive history and physical examinations for adult patients.
  • Evaluate, diagnose, and develop treatment plans for patients with acute and chronic medical conditions.
  • Provide direct patient care in inpatient units, outpatient clinics, emergency consultations, and critical care settings as assigned.
  • Participate in daily rounds, admissions, discharges, consultations, and continuity clinic activities.
  • Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests, laboratory studies, imaging, and procedures under supervision.
  • Document patient encounters, treatment plans, progress notes, discharge summaries, and other required medical records accurately and timely in the electronic medical record.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, attending physicians, nursing staff, consultants, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Participate in night, weekend, holiday, and on-call coverage schedules as assigned.
  • Attend and participate in educational conferences, lectures, morbidity and mortality conferences, grand rounds, and scholarly activities.
  • Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Adhere to institutional policies, residency program requirements, ACGME standards, and all applicable regulatory guidelines.
  • Maintain professionalism, ethical conduct, patient confidentiality, and cultural sensitivity in all interactions.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited medical school required.
  • Enrollment in an accredited Internal Medicine Residency Program required.
  • Valid New York State limited permit, medical license, or eligibility as required.
  • Current BLS certification required; ACLS certification may be required.
  • Strong clinical, communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and perform clinical duties for extended periods.
  • Ability to respond promptly to patient care emergencies.
  • Ability to lift or assist patients and move clinical equipment as necessary.

Working Conditions

  • Hospital, ambulatory care, and clinical practice settings.
  • Exposure to infectious diseases and other healthcare-related hazards.
  • Rotating schedules including evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments.
