MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST

ABOUT THE ROLE
Our client, a reputable organisation operating within the NGO, Healthcare and Oncology sector, is seeking a competent, detail-oriented and patient-focused Medical Laboratory Scientist to join its clinical team.
The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting laboratory investigations, processing and analysing specimens, maintaining quality assurance standards, operating laboratory equipment and ensuring the accurate, timely and confidential reporting of test results.
The ideal candidate must demonstrate strong technical competence, attention to detail, adherence to professional standards and a commitment to patient safety and quality healthcare delivery.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Laboratory Investigations & Testing
Perform routine and specialised laboratory investigations in accordance with approved procedures and clinical requirements.
Collect, receive, label, process and analyse patient specimens accurately.
Conduct relevant haematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, immunology and serology investigations.
Ensure proper specimen handling, storage and disposal in line with approved protocols.
Verify and validate laboratory results before release.
Identify abnormal or critical results and escalate appropriately to the clinical team.
Ensure timely processing and reporting of laboratory results.
Laboratory Equipment & Operations
Operate and monitor laboratory analysers, equipment and instruments.
Perform routine equipment checks, calibration and basic troubleshooting.
Ensure laboratory equipment is properly maintained and functional.
Maintain equipment maintenance, calibration and service records.
Monitor laboratory reagents, consumables and supplies and report shortages promptly.
Ensure appropriate storage and handling of reagents and laboratory materials.
Quality Assurance & Quality Control
Implement and maintain laboratory quality assurance and quality control procedures.
Conduct routine quality control checks and document results accurately.
Investigate quality deviations, errors and non-conformities and recommend corrective actions.
Participate in internal and external quality assessment programmes where applicable.
Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance laboratory accuracy and turnaround time.
Ensure compliance with laboratory SOPs, clinical protocols and professional standards.
Health, Safety & Infection Prevention
Maintain high standards of laboratory hygiene, biosafety and infection prevention.
Handle biological specimens and hazardous materials safely.
Ensure appropriate segregation, handling and disposal of laboratory waste.
Use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Report accidents, exposure incidents, equipment faults and safety concerns promptly.
Maintain a clean, safe and organised laboratory environment.
Documentation & Reporting
Maintain accurate laboratory records, registers and patient test documentation.
Ensure confidentiality and secure handling of patient and laboratory information.
Prepare laboratory reports and operational statistics as required.
Maintain quality control, equipment maintenance and inventory records.
Ensure laboratory results are accurately documented and released within established timelines.
Support clinical audits and laboratory performance reviews.
Clinical Team Collaboration
Work closely with physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals to support diagnosis and patient management.
Provide relevant technical information regarding laboratory results when required.
Participate in multidisciplinary clinical discussions where appropriate.
Communicate professionally with patients regarding specimen collection and laboratory procedures.
Escalate critical or unexpected findings through the appropriate clinical channels.
Inventory & Resource Management
Monitor laboratory reagents, consumables and supplies.
Maintain appropriate stock levels and minimise wastage and product expiry.
Participate in stock-taking and inventory reconciliation.
Ensure proper storage of laboratory materials according to manufacturer requirements.
Report damaged, expired or compromised materials promptly.
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPIs)
Performance will be assessed based on:
Accuracy and reliability of laboratory results.
Timely completion of laboratory investigations.
Compliance with laboratory SOPs and quality standards.
Quality control and quality assurance performance.
Proper operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
Accuracy and completeness of laboratory documentation.
Compliance with health, safety and infection-control requirements.
Effective management of laboratory reagents and consumables.
Patient confidentiality and professional conduct.
Contribution to laboratory quality improvement.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
The successful candidate should possess:

BMLS/AMLS degree or an equivalent recognised qualification in Medical Laboratory Science.

Current practising licence with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).

3–5 years of relevant post-qualification experience in a clinical, hospital or diagnostic laboratory environment.
Demonstrable experience in laboratory investigations, quality control and operation of laboratory equipment.
Experience within a hospital, diagnostic centre, healthcare organisation or specialised clinical environment will be an advantage.
Good knowledge of laboratory quality management systems and SOPs.
Sound understanding of laboratory safety, infection prevention and specimen handling procedures.
Proficiency in laboratory information systems and Microsoft Office applications will be an advantage.
