The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) assists with the maintenance of policies, procedures, and quality control practices to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This role requires meticulous and organized record control, excellent attention to detail, ability to multi-task while remaining agile with duties and scheduled timelines. The MLS will perform routine medical laboratory test, low to high complexity, and assist with training, verifications/validations, as needed. Must be authorized to work in the United States.

Essential Job Responsibilities: The following are intended to be examples of the accountabilities for which the person in this position is responsible.   • Perform technical laboratory functions including chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, and molecular testing while maintaining turnaround time (TAT).
  • Report test results following clinic protocols alerting providers, nurses, or staff, as needed.
  • Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results.
  • Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Adhere to laboratory’s quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  • Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director.
  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
  • Assist with the creation, implementation, and maintenance of departmental protocols, methods, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies. Set up, maintain, calibrate, and clean medical laboratory equipment as required.
  • Assist with training of new laboratory personnel.
  • Ensures training content, safety practices, and role development align with CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA, and other regulatory standards applicable to clinical operations.
  • Comply with all federal, state, and local regulations. Includes but is not limited to FDA, OSHA, CLIA, and CAP agencies.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Essential Skills and Experiences

  • Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Immunology, Cell Biology, or Clinical Laboratory Science from an accredited institution.
  • Active and in good standing American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) Certification required
  • Minimum of 1-year related Generalist (Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation) clinical laboratory experience in and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience is required
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills, such as word processing and laboratory information systems.
  • Strong understanding of good laboratory practices and regulatory compliance.
