Appointment will be made on MEDICAL LABORATORY AIDES scale (€42,033- €49,050) at a point in line with Government pay policy.

Full time, 39 hours

Responsibilities

DUTIES

The duties of the Medical Laboratory Assistant include appropriate duties assigned by the Chief Medical Scientist/appropriate Line Manager.

The general duties include, but are not limited to:

  • To engage in training as appropriate. Engaging with all end users regarding information on initial and ongoing training and competency assessments. Booking staff into available training sessions. Admin duties, typing and record keeping required.
  • Physically updating operator training records and operator certifications on POCT middlewares as and when needed. Scanning and saving all training records and completing training excel logs.
  • Monitoring NPT email and phone for day to day operational queries.
  • Complete laboratory cleaning schedule.
  • Prepare equipment, and/or reagents as directed by the appropriate scientific Laboratory staff.
  • To repair equipment/hotswap equipment, as directed by the appropriate scientific Laboratory staff. This involves the use of Q-Pulse and NPT IT middlewares to audit trail the equipment movements and activity to maintain current equipment asset register.
  • To package and return faulty equipment to supplier as and when needed. This involves logging the issue/case with supplier and following instructions from supplier for shipment/ service visit.
  • To maintain an inventory of all equipment on Q-Pulse and EQA portals.
  • Receipt and correct storage of EQA samples.
  • To assist scientific staff with sample collection for initial and ongoing equipment/ IT verification studies.
  • Collection, delivery, decontamination, cleaning of laboratory equipment.
  • Monitoring of supplies, stocks and requesting stocks as appropriate.
  • Receipt and initial batch acceptance of consumables and reagent deliveries. Check, unpack, label and appropriately store deliveries.
  • Completing ward rounds and topping up stock where needed.
  • To raise initial internal non-conformances on Q-Pulse for broken/missing equipment for review by the departmental quality officer.
  • Perform Kelsius temperature checks to ensure that NPT probes are functioning as expected to ensure correct storage of stock.
  • Manage waste removal from the laboratory.
  • Monitor first aid, chemical spill kit and PPE supplies.
  • Scan batch acceptance forms and delivery dockets to Q-Pulse to promote green lab initiatives and keep the NPT lab as paperless as possible.
  • Perform preparatory scientific tasks as directed by scientific staff.
  • Compliance with ISO15189 standard during all activities carried out.

NOTES:

  • The range of work allotted to Medical Laboratory Assistants is not exclusive to them and may, at any time, be performed by a member of the Scientific Laboratory Staff.
  • To perform such other duties appropriate to the post as may be assigned to him/her from time to time by the Chief Executive Officer or such other officer designated by the Beaumont Hospital Board.

Specific Duties

The specific duties for the post will be assigned by the head of the area to which they have been assigned.

  • Leaving certificate level education preferably with a Science subject or relevant experience.
  • Relevant experience and computer skills are highly desirable.

Health

Candidates for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.

Character

Candidates for and any person holding the office must be of good character.

If an appointee has previously been employed in the Civil or Public Service and that appointee is entitled to or in receipt of a pension from the Civil or Public Service or where a Civil/ Public Service pension comes into payment during the appointee’s re-employment that pension will be subject to abatement in accordance with Section 52 of the Public Service Pensions (Single Scheme and other Provisions) Act 2012.
