Job Description

Medical Lab Scientist or Medical Lab Technician - Core Lab and North Dodge Clinic - 60% Weekend Option-(26003451)

Qualified candidates may be eligible for a sign-on incentive of $5,000 based on years of experience!

(Current UI employees are not eligible for incentive)

The Department of Pathology is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Laboratory Scientist to, under general supervision, provide waived and moderately complex clinical lab testing and analysis on biological specimens to provide information used in the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of disease.Will use a variety of procedures that may involve numerous detailed tests and techniques that require the use of professional judgment.

This position is 60%-time, Weekend Option, Saturday and Sunday from 0700-1930. Shifts will start at the North Dodge Clinic from 0700-1200 before traveling to Medical Center University to work the remainder of the shift in the Core Laboratories.

The department intends to hire for one position from either Medical Laboratory Technician, or Medical Laboratory Scientist, based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. Please indicate in your application materials the position you wish to be considered for on indicate both.

Duties to include:

·Performs quantitative and qualitative analysis for both waived and moderately complex testing on laboratory clinical and research biological specimens such as blood, tissue, and body fluids.

·Provides information to health care provider regarding test methodology and interpretation. Evaluates test results

·Investigates quality assurance issues involving patient samples, Carries out recommended corrective action for quality assurance.

·Calibrates, conducts routine maintenance and troubleshoots laboratory instrumentation.

·Performs specimen processing and accessioning tasks in the LIS. Creates packing lists and prepares specimens for transport via courier.

Qualifications

MLT Qualifications:

·Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology program from an accredited institution, OR

·Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or eligible from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency (NCA), OR

·Successfully completed an official US military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician) is required.

·Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

·Must possess a valid driver’s license and meet the requirements of the University of Iowa Fleet Safety Program driving standard (University of Iowa Operations Manual Part V, Chapter19).

·Certification from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or National Credentialing Aency (NCA) as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is highly desirable.

·Previous phlebotomy experience is desirable

·Excellent customer services skills are desirable.

MLS Qualifications:

·A Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology program from an accredited institution is required.

·Six (6) months – one (1) year clinical laboratory experience, which may include program training experience, is required.

·Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or a categorical/specialist certification in the appropriate laboratory discipline from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) from Health Education and Welfare (HEW) is required.

·Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

·Must possess a valid driver’s license and meet the requirementsof the University of Iowa Fleet Safety Program driving standard (University of Iowa Operations Manual Part V, Chapter19).

·Previous phlebotomy experience is desirable.

·Excellent customer service skills are desirable.

Pathology will be filling this position at one of two levels. The Medical Lab Technician classification salary starts at $29,100, and the Medical Lab Scientist salary starts at $32,100. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. You must indicate in your cover letter the level of classification (MLT and/or MLS) you wish to be considered for or indicate both. See required qualifications for additional information.
