Provide medical direction for Versiti Diagnostic Hematology laboratories to include hemostasis, platelet and neutrophil immunology and hematology genetics. Key components of this position comprise clinical and scientific direction to include case review, clinical consultation, and associated assay development. Responsible for delegated regulatory duties under CLIA. Participate in educational initiatives and clinical/applied research within both Versiti and its affiliated health systems.

Responsibilities

  • Provides clinical case review & consultation with DL clients and physicians on hematology-related test results and transfusion medicine physicians regarding development, utilization, and quality assessment of hemostasis-related blood products.
  • Provides medical direction, including compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and accreditation agencies, for hematology diagnostic services at Versiti Diagnostic Laboratories (DL). Adheres to Versiti, CLIA, Biosafety, NRC, FDA, and OSHA procedures and regulations.
  • Collaborates with laboratory leadership of diagnostic hematology laboratory staff to oversee technical duties and working with Versiti laboratory management to provide educational and skill advancement.
  • Partners with the DL product development team to develop innovative diagnostic solutions in hematology.
  • Participates in clinical and/or applied research at Versiti, industry partners, or partner hospitals, and publishes in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Fosters education of associates, as well as medical and lay persons through participation in Versiti educational offerings and activities.
  • Maintains a high level of professional expertise in laboratory medicine, hematology, and other areas of medical expertise with demonstration of ongoing continued medical education in the field.
  • Serves on appropriate Versiti committees and in other professionally related local, regional, and national opportunities. Participates in academic programs at academic institutions as needed.
  • Maintains a high level of community involvement and supports Public Relations outreach efforts.
  • Maintains medical records and related documentation in accordance with legal and organizational requirements.

  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification
  • Understands and performs in accordance with all applicable regulatory and compliance requirements

Qualifications

Education

  • M.D. or D.O. or M.D./Ph.D. with clinical training and board certification in clinical pathology and/or combined anatomic and clinical pathology required
  • M.D. or D.O. or M.D./Ph.D. with clinical training and board certification in adult or pediatric hematology will also be considered in lieu of required degree
  • Laboratory experience in hematology required
  • Current or eligible for a medical license in Wisconsin. required

Experience

  • Demonstrated training and experience in pathology/laboratory medicine or clinical hematology required
  • Experience in basic, clinical, or translational research, as evidenced by publications and presentations preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership and team building abilities preferred
  • Knowledge of and commitment to excellence in laboratory medicine preferred
  • Demonstrated potential for serving as an active collaborator who has the desire and growing skill set to guide or be a resource to clinical hematologists, clinical trial sponsors, and hematology researchers preferred
  • Demonstrated innovative and progressive approach to continuous improvement in areas of responsibility preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of clinical and laboratory medicine required
  • Ability to read and interpret SOPs, and state, federal, and national regulations and standards as they apply to laboratory medicine (i.e., FDA—Food and Drug Administration, CAP—College of American Pathologists) required
  • Strong interpersonal skills and able to work within a team required
  • Strong computer literacy with ability to easily interact within system based electronic medical and laboratory records required
  • Self-driven and accountable required
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks and meet deadlines preferred
  • Excellent consultative and consensus building skills. Able to collaborate with other cross-functional partners for standardization of applicable policies, processes, and procedures throughout the system preferred
  • Good communication skills; excellent oral and written presentation skills with the capacity to adapt content level and style for varied audiences preferred
