The Corporate Medical Director develops, directs, and manages programs and processes to research, assess, and prevent beryllium sensitization and chronic beryllium disease (CBD) across Materion's global operations. This role provides direct medical services for the Elmore, Ohio flagship site while serving as the enterprise-wide clinical authority on occupational health. The Medical Director builds and standardizes occupational medicine protocols across all Materion sites, partners with regional clinic and nursing networks, and represents Materion's medical program to external research, regulatory, and industry bodies. This position serves as a core member of the Global EHS Leadership Team and reports to the Vice President, Global EHS.

You will have the opportunity to:

Beryllium Health & Medical Surveillance

  • Own the global medical surveillance program, generating data and trend analysis that informs leadership decisions and demonstrates progress in beryllium health-effect prevention.
  • Direct surveillance of workers for beryllium health effects, including lung health monitoring via chest imaging and pulmonary function testing where required.
  • Support current and former employees in accessing competent diagnostic services for potential beryllium-related medical symptoms.
  • Maintain and evolve the Beryllium Management Plan (BMP) as the designated technical resource, ensuring consistent implementation across all applicable global sites.
  • Communicate beryllium health-effect information and Materion's prevention efforts clearly to employees, works councils, and site leadership.

Global Occupational Health Program Leadership

  • Design, standardize, and scale occupational health programs across Performance Materials, Precision Optics, and Electronic Materials business segments, adapting to regional regulatory frameworks (OSHA, EU, and other applicable jurisdictions).
  • Assess, guide, and provide clinical oversight for site-based nursing and medical service models globally, including partnership/contract clinical staffing structures.
  • Partner with the occupational health succession and staffing strategy (contract physician, full-time MD, and clinic coordination models) to ensure continuity of medical coverage across the network.
  • Serve as clinical advisor for medical case management, fitness-for-duty, and return-to-work programs in collaboration with Workers' Compensation and HR

Research, Records & Compliance

  • Advance Materion's beryllium health-effects research agenda in collaboration with NIOSH, academic institutions, and private research partners; contribute to publications and scientific dialogue.
  • Own global medical records governance, including BeBLPT results, sensitization/CBD evaluations, audiometric testing, and other surveillance data, ensuring data integrity and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA medical provisions and equivalent international occupational health regulatory requirements across all business segments.
  • Liaise with government agencies, regulatory authorities, and Department of Energy beryllium compensation program coordinators as required.
  • Represent Materion externally to government scientists, regulators, and professional/industry associations on occupational and beryllium health matters.

EH&S Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Serve as an active member of the Global EHS Leadership Team, contributing medical and clinical perspective to enterprise safety strategy.
  • Partner with EHS, Industrial Hygiene, and Product Stewardship leadership to integrate medical surveillance insights into broader risk management and regulatory strategy.
  • Support the development and implementation of site and business-unit safety programs by participating on management and plant safety teams as needed.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.)
  • Board certified in Occupational Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine (or international equivalent)
  • Demonstrated experience building or scaling occupational health programs across multi-site or global manufacturing operations
  • High level of ethics and integrity
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders across cultures and regions
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with employees at all levels of the organization
  • Strong critical thinking, deductive reasoning, and decision-making skills
  • Experience with global occupational health data systems and medical surveillance platforms preferred

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • 10+ years of occupational medicine experience, ideally including exposure to specialty metals, chemical, or advanced materials manufacturing
  • Experience with beryllium, heavy metals, or other sensitizing-agent occupational health programs
  • Research and publication experience in occupational or environmental medicine
  • Board certification and experience in a second ABMS specialty
  • Experience managing or advising on global clinic networks and contract medical staffing models
