Medical Director
Reports To: Group Managing Director (GMD) / Board of Directors
Employment Type: Full-Time (On-Site)
Location: Maitama, Abuja
Experience Level: Minimum of 10 Years
Salary: Open / Negotiable
The Medical Director will provide strategic, clinical, and operational leadership across all medical and clinical services of the hospital. The role is responsible for ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered care while driving clinical governance, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and continuous improvement.
Working closely with the GMD and Board of Directors, the Medical Director will lead the hospital's clinical vision, oversee medical staff and departments, ensure adherence to best clinical practices, and strengthen the hospital's reputation as a center of excellence in healthcare delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership & Patient Care
Promote patient satisfaction through high-quality, patient-centered care
Oversee the development and evaluation of patient safety measures across all services
Provide clinical oversight for ongoing projects and evaluate new treatments and technologies
Ensure confidentiality of medical records and adherence to medical ethics
Quality Assurance & Clinical Governance
Lead quality improvement initiatives, including tracking mortality, morbidity, infection control, and readmission rates
Supervise clinical audits and governance processes
Provide oversight to the Clinical Director and Heads of Clinical Departments
Report quality and performance outcomes to the Board
Strategic & Operational Management
Provide strategic leadership and contribute to hospital planning and execution
Coordinate multidisciplinary collaboration across departments
Develop and update policies, clinical guidelines, and SOPs
Oversee effective use of EMR and hospital information systems
Human Resource & Capacity Development
Lead workforce planning, recruitment, and performance management
Ensure optimal staffing levels and professional conduct
Support continuous medical education and staff development
Financial & Resource Management
Develop and manage clinical and operational budgets
Ensure efficient utilization of financial and material resources
Apply sound financial judgment in decision-making
Regulatory Compliance & Stakeholder Engagement
Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, and NHIS requirements
Keep Management and Board informed of regulatory changes
Build and maintain strong stakeholder relationships
Represent the hospital at professional and industry engagements
Corporate Representation & Other Duties
Collaborate with marketing and business development teams to enhance brand positioning
Maintain relationships with regulators, partners, and professional bodies
Perform other duties as assigned by the Board or Management
Qualifications & Experience
Required Qualifications
Fellowship qualification from a recognized medical college (e.g., NPMCN, WACP, WACS, or equivalent)
Full registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN)
Experience
Minimum of 7 years post-fellowship clinical experience
At least 3 years in a senior medical leadership or hospital administrative role
Proven experience in clinical governance, quality improvement, and patient safety
Demonstrated experience in budget planning and financial management
Prior experience within the private healthcare sector is required
