Job Description

Medical Device Reprocessing Technician (MDR) Mentorship

This position provides the successful candidate with the opportunity to complete a Medical Device Reprocessing Technician Mentorship Program designed to develop the technical knowledge, skills and competencies required to independently perform the duties of a Medical Device Reprocessing Technician. The mentorship program will include formal online education through Vancouver Community College, and a structured preceptorship at Whitehorse General Hospital. Successful completion of all educational and clinical components of the mentorship program is a condition of continued employment.

Upon successful completion of the mentorship program, the employee will continue in a permanent full-time Medical Device Reprocessing Technician position. Participation in the MDRD on-call rotation is a requirement of the position. The call schedule consists of evenings and weekends and is divided on a fair and equitable basis among Staff. Successful candidates will also be required to enter into a one (1) year Return of Service Agreement, commencing upon successful completion of the mentorship program and achievement of independent practice.

Regular Full-Time - 1.0 FTE

This position is at the L04 level with an hourly pay range of $32.22 to $40.77

The following outlines the general responsibilities of the Medical Device Reprocessing Technician Position upon completion of the mentorship program.

Reporting to the Clinical Care Manager Surgical Services, the incumbent decontaminates specialized equipment; packages and processes instruments used in the O.R., all Yukon Hospital sites, and external partners; performs other related duties.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of methods, techniques and procedures for sterilizing hospital equipment and surgical instruments
  • Knowledge of surgical instruments

  • Ability to operate and maintain hospital equipment and machines and handle delicate instruments

The successful candidate is required to have a high school diploma or equivalent. Experience or exposure in a medical, healthcare, or sterile processing environment is considered an asset. Current CPR certification is required.
