For more than 40 years, Médecins du Monde, a campaigning medical organisation committed to international solidarity, has been caring for the most vulnerable populations here and abroad. It has continued to bear witness to obstacles that exist in accessing healthcare and has secured sustainable improvements in health-for-all policies.
Those working for this independent organisation do not solely dispense care and treatment but condemn violations of human dignity and rights and fight to improve matters for populations living in precarious situations.
MdM France currently works in 30 countries across all continents to facilitate access to healthcare through 6 political battles:
MdM in Tanzania
Médecins du Monde (MdM) Tanzania is a long‑standing humanitarian health actor operating in the country since 1992, with a reputation for evidence‑based, community‑driven interventions that address the needs of people most at risk of being excluded from healthcare. MdM implements a combined portfolio on Harm Reduction (HR) and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), focusing on people who use drugs, sex workers, adolescents, and other key vulnerable populations. The mission works in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MoH), Drug Control and Enforcement Authority (DCEA), prime Minister Office-Regional Administrative and Local Government (PMO-RALG), public health facilities and a network of local civil‑society partners to expand access to inclusive, stigma‑free health services.
MdM also implements the CUTTS Hep C project with international and local partners to:
· Introduce innovative, low‑cost Hepatitis C prevention tools (LAB & LDSS)
· Develop an accessible care model for PWID
· Generate evidence for national policy
· Strengthen community‑led monitoring and empowerment
MdM Tanzania further provides harm reduction technical assistance in Rwanda in collaboration with MoH and CSOs. Looking ahead, MdM aims to expand harm reduction to new regions, strengthen technical assistance capacities nationally and regionally, broaden SRHR interventions, and improve emergency response readiness.
