Medical Billing & Insurance Follow-Up Specialist (Hybrid/Remote)

Location: Sterling, VA (initial onsite training required)

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM

Employment Type: Permanent

Salary: $37,440-$41,600 annually + Monthly Commission Opportunities

Work Arrangement: Hybrid with majority remote after training

About the Opportunity

A growing healthcare revenue cycle organization is seeking a Medical Billing & Insurance Follow-Up Specialist to join its team. This role focuses on researching and resolving outstanding hospital claims, working directly with insurance carriers, patients, and internal billing teams to ensure timely claim resolution and account recovery.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience in medical billing, collections, accounts receivable, claims follow-up, or revenue cycle management who enjoys problem solving, insurance research, and customer interaction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Follow up on outstanding hospital claims that remain unpaid
  • Contact insurance carriers to determine claim status and next steps for resolution
  • Research denials and payment issues and identify corrective actions
  • Communicate with patients regarding account balances when appropriate
  • Submit documentation such as medical records and authorization requests as needed
  • Maintain accurate account notes and documentation within company systems
  • Handle inbound and outbound calls related to account resolution
  • Collaborate with billing teams to ensure claims are processed correctly
  • Meet productivity and performance goals, including managing approximately 20-30 claims per day after training
  • Provide high-quality customer service while maintaining compliance standards

Required Qualifications

  • Previous experience in medical billing, medical collections, claims follow-up, accounts receivable, or revenue cycle
  • Experience working with insurance carriers such as Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Aetna, or similar payers
  • Knowledge of hospital claims and insurance reimbursement processes
  • Experience using Cerner or Epic
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple computer systems simultaneously
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Understanding of HIPAA and healthcare compliance requirements

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with pediatric healthcare organizations
  • Strong knowledge of hospital billing workflows and denial management
  • Familiarity with UB-04 claims and healthcare reimbursement processes

Training & Onboarding

  • Initial training will take place onsite in Sterling, VA
  • Additional system training will be conducted in Silver Spring, MD
  • Most of the first two weeks will be spent onsite for training and system access setup
  • Following training, employees will primarily work remotely

  • Reliable high-speed internet connection
  • Ability to hardwire company equipment directly to internet service
  • Successful completion of background check and drug screening

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $37440.00 - $41600.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.

Commission plus benefits.
