
An employee in this class performs para-professional work, or assists medical providers in conducting medical examinations of patients in health centers or related health programs. Work includes performing various preliminary medical screenings tests and clerical duties. Employees will also ensure compliance with established safety and health procedures during phlebotomy operations.
The incumbent's performance is supervised and subject to review by professional supervisors.

Work schedule: Monday – Friday, 3:00pm - 11:00pm
KEY ELEMENTS OF THE ROLE
Interviewing clients to obtain medical history and record information in charts; assists clients with forms and applications for services;
Taking blood pressure and pulse, testing urine specimens, drawing blood samples and checking height, weight and vision to prepare client for complete physical examination by providers;
Setting up examining rooms and tables; sterilizing and cleaning equipment; Performs patient support duties such as answering phones, making appointments and coordinating insurance coverage; maintaining records and preparing correspondence and reports.
Applicant must have a working knowledge of medical office policies and procedures, preferably in an OASAS Clinic setting.
Candidate must have the ability to safely draw intravenous blood.
Candidate must also have the ability to deal effectively with clients in a courteous and tactful manner.
In addition, candidate must have the ability to maintain records and prepare reports; and follow oral and written instructions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one (1) year of experience in a position which involved assisting with medical treatment or in the examination of patients, and included the performance of intravenous blood drawing.
NOTE
Either satisfactory completion of a medical assistant program from a State licensed school;
OR
A school or program accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education;
OR
A college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State may be substituted for the one (1) year of required experience.
This Role Is A Provisional Appointment
A provisional appointment, which occurs only in the competitive class, is a temporary appointment to a position for which no eligible list exists or for which an eligible list exists with fewer than three candidates who are willing to accept the position. In order to become permanent, the employee who is provisionally appointed must take the next examination for the position in question. The appointment to the position is then made from among the three highest scoring passing candidates who indicate their willingness to accept the position. Civil Service law does not compel the appointing authority to choose the provisional employee should he or she be one of the three candidates
