Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose
The Medical Assistant (Temporary/Casual) is responsible for assisting students and staff in all clinical and administrative support for patient care and treatment. The essential functions listed below are intended to identify those that are generally assigned. The Medical Assistant may perform many if not all functions, and in addition, other responsibilities may be assigned that are unit specific and based on business need and scope of care of the Medical Assistant.

This position will be in the Sacramento Clinic but may be required to travel to Stockton and San Francisco clinics under certain circumstances.

Essential Functions
Performs basic clinical duties as assigned and which are within the scope of his/her practice and experience:
  • Obtains vital signs inputs into Electronic Medical Record ( EMR)
  • Prepares patients for examination
  • Assists a provider with medical procedures
  • Educate students about health care issues and health insurance. Participate in outreach activities
  • Administers medications as ordered by oral, intradermal, subcutaneous, or intramuscular route
  • Performs fingerstick blood glucose checks
  • Obtains urine and performs urine tests ordered by provider
  • Performs electrocardiograms (EKGs)
  • Processes lab specimens for courier pick up
  • Performs CLIA-waived in-house lab tests (specifically, rapid strep, rapid mono, influenza, urine, pregnancy, and glucometer blood glucose tests)
  • Administers vaccines and PPD skin tests as ordered
  • Cleans and restocks clinical areas
  • Orders supplies and medications for all campuses, while maintaining PAR levels
  • Monitors inventory and expiration dates of supplies
  • Provides general information to patients, visitors, staff and physicians. Handles and/or resolves patient dissatisfaction or concerns. Refers patient concerns to the appropriate individual for resolution, as necessary. Maintains a professional demeanor.
  • Maintains and documents, clinical records and forms. Scans documents into patient charts through use of EMR system. Enters immunizations into the EMR Serves as Key person for staff for Point N Click and EMR program issues.

Performs basic administrative, clerical, and technical supportive tasks including, but not limited to:
  • Schedules patients for all three campuses for Health Services
  • Manage the schedule so sufficient sick call appointments are available on any given day
  • Updates patient demographic information
  • Monitor’s completion of compliance forms, collection of student health fees and confirms health insurance using Electronic Medical Record system
  • Performs opening and closure procedures, adhering to expectations of Attendance/Tardiness policy
  • Uses time management skills to multi-task with excellect attention to detail and accuracy
  • Maintains working inventory of clinic office supplies: reorders as needed
  • Performs front desk support and cashier duties for Student Health Services when needed
  • Performs basic account/record keeping functions by posting all client transactions, confirming accuracy of the ticket, and accounting for all monies and credit transactions received for services and fees by the end of each working day. Monitors and collects outstanding student balances and no-show fees.
  • Provides cross-coverage for CAPS and SHS administrative assistant as needed.
  • Participate in Health and Wellness outreach activities
  • Support Immunization compliance program
  • Performs other duties, including participation on campus committees, as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Medical Assistant Certification
  • Completed Certification and Licensure for Phlebotomy Technician or successfully obtained within six (6) months of start date.
  • Graduate of approved program of training, which meets state requirements to perform venipuncture, injections and skin tests, with certificate of satisfactory completion.
  • Two (2) years’ experience in a medical office or hospital setting with utilization of clinical skills.
  • Current BLSAED for professional rescuers and healthcare providers.
  • Excellent customer and communication service skills with ability to handle difficult situations with professionalism and compassion.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of medical terminology and medical office practices.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency in medical billing and insurance claims to perform functions when necessary.
  • Solid computer skills and proficiency with medical billing systems.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of all State and Federal confidentiality regulations.
  • Ability to deal with difficult or stressful situations with professionalism and calm.
  • Positive attitude, proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Physical Requirements

Frequent standing and walking, occasional sitting, computer and phone use. May be requested to lift up to 25 lbs. Occupational exposure to blood borne and body fluid pathogens may reasonably be anticipated. Personal protective equipment will be provided to reduce or eliminate exposure to routine or limited infectious agents.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel
Work performed in clinical environment. Work performed during standard clinic hours, may require minimal overtime to meet business needs and occasionally requires work out-of-doors with exposure to warmer or cooler temperatures. Additional evening and/or weekend hours may be requested to support department, division and University programs, projects and initiatives. Some travel may be required including to other campuses.

Valid driver’s license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University’s fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University and its insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.
