Job Description

OF JOB DUTIES:
Provide students enrolled in a Medical Assisting program with practical experience in a clinical setting, allowing them to observe and participate in various administrative and clinical tasks.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

To perform this internship successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily:

  • Assist with patient care
  • Interviews patients, accurately takes vital signs such as manual BP, pulse rate, temperature, 02 level, weight and height, and properly records information into EMR
  • Assist with examinations
  • Prepare patients for procedures/exams
  • Prepares exam rooms for examination of patients as well as stocking them
  • Collect specimens
  • Observe procedures
  • Understand instruments and materials provider requests for certain procedures
  • Set up medical equipment
  • Manage inventory of supplies
  • Document patient information and manage records using EMR system
  • Ensure patient comfort
  • Performs EKG's, urinalysis, strep test, flu test, covid test, mono test, pregnancy test, checks patients A1C, etc.
  • Administer injections and immunizations per provider orders
  • Manage sensitive patient information
  • Change wound dressings
  • Instrument sterilization
  • May be requested to learn duties outside of normal responsibilities (i.e., learn patient check-in)
  • Coordinator patient communications regarding refill medications, order additional labs or imaging as needed, complete prior authorizations, complete precertification for imaging, etc.
  • Instruct patients and/or their family as directed by the provider.
  • Communicate with patients effectively to discuss results as directed by the provider while maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Perform blood draws competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible.
  • Medical Assistants are responsible for assisting patients with mobility and transport needs within the clinical setting. Duties include helping patients in and out of wheelchairs or exam tables, escorting or transporting patients to various areas, and ensuring their comfort and safety throughout the process. Medical Assistants are expected to monitor patients during transport for signs of distress, maintain the cleanliness of transport equipment, and provide emotional support when necessary.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • An active student enrolled in an approved school affiliated program
  • Complete the required documentation prior to approval of start
  • Diligently follow all HIPAA guidelines
  • Must have effective communication skills
  • This position requires the ability to stand and walk for extended periods. It involves a full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patients and equipment. Medical Assistants must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 30 pounds and assist in moving patients weighing up to 300 pounds. The role also includes regular exposure to bodily fluids and demands of adherence to strict safety and hygiene protocols.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The position requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, repetitive motions, and finger use. Pushing and pulling are occasionally required. Use of a computer, keyboard, and telephone along with various office machines is an essential part of the job.
