This position is a seasoned Medical Assistant who is responsible for organizing, planning, and coordinating the daily activities relating to patient flow through the clinic and throughout the continuum of care. The position will ensure optimal, efficient flow of patients ensuring high quality of service and efficiency. This position will serve as a principal EpicCare super user and will be responsible for leading the clinical staff by providing mentorship and training. This position may also be responsible for performing specialized skills as required by area of assignment. This position provides direct patient care and may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to state law.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Performs all clinical functions of the Medical Assistant I, II and III.
  • Performs as the principal EpicCare super-user which includes providing support and training for staff and providers and attending ongoing training and updates as available.
  • Facilitates improvement projects within the clinic annually in coordination with the clinic care team.
  • Advocates for efficient clinic work flow which may include patient or visit flow coordination, daily schedule review, huddle lead, or pre-visit planning.
  • Serves as a primary preceptor for new staff.
  • Provides ongoing support and mentoring for all clinical staff.
  • May coordinate care for specific patient populations.
  • May participate in documenting compliance audits as designated.
  • May coordinate referrals and obtain pre-authorization from insurance companies for procedures and treatments.
  • May complete patient registration, assists patient with co-pays and account balances, and reconcile daily cash reports.
  • May perform other administrative duties, projects, and committee assignments as assigned.
  • At the discretion of department operational and patient care needs, this position is required to work rotating schedules, which may include variable hours, weekends, nights, and holidays to meet the staffing and patient care demands of a 24/7 complex health system. Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance during assigned shifts is considered an essential function of the role.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Demonstrated availability to work variable and rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, in a 24/7 patient care environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making.
  • Ability to act as the chief role model for clinical staff exhibiting behavior qualities as defined in the PROMISE standards with passion and positivity.
  • Ability to prioritize patient flow and the needs of the clinic.
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
  • Ability to assist providers by providing patient care under the supervision of a licensed clinician.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to review data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in computer programs such as EpicCare or any other clinical program.
  • Demonstrated phlebotomy skills, lab specimen handling, and processing skills.

Qualifications

Required

  • Six (6) months of contiguous experience as a Medical Assistant within the department.
  • In good standing with the organization, not having received formal disciplinary action in the past rolling calendar year.

Licenses Required

  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • One of the following
    • Current Advanced EMT certification with the State of Utah.
    • Current certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through AAMA
    • Current certification to practice as a Paramedic in the State of Utah.
    • Current certification as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through AMT
    • Currently credentialed in ABR-OE (Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry) through AAMA.
    • Current certification as a NRCMA - Medical Assistant through the National Association for Health Professionals.
    • Current Clinical Medical Assistant Certification through NHA.
    • Current certification as a National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) through NCCT.

* Additional license requirements as determined by the hiring department.

Qualifications (Preferred)

Preferred

  • Completion of the MA Leadership program through the Clinical Staff Education department.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.

  • This position involves intermediate working conditions in a healthcare setting that may exert up to 50 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving patients or objects, such as medical equipment, while providing patient care. Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases and may be required to function around prisoners or behavioral health patients.
