for Internal Candidates

The Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program is designed for candidates passionate about healthcare and eager to learn in a hands-on environment. Apprentices will receive comprehensive training from experienced preceptors in outpatient clinics in the greater Portland metropolitan area. This intensive six-month earn-to-learn program enables apprentices to earn a full-time wage while training to become a Medical Assistant. In addition to hands-on in-clinic training, apprentices are required to complete unpaid coursework outside of clinic time.

Key Program Details

  • Program Length: Approximately six months (a minimum of 1,000 clinical training hours).

  • Clinic Training Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm (40 hours per week in-person).

  • Location: Primary Care and Specialty clinics in the Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas, and Yamhill counties.

  • Outside Coursework: 10-15 hours per week of unpaid coursework to be completed outside of clinic for the first 20 weeks of the program. This includes live, synchronous sessions on Mondays and Thursdays from 6:00-9:00pm and asynchronous work that can be done at times that are convenient for apprentices.

  • Pay & Benefits: This is a full-time, paid, benefited position with a mid-point pay increase.

  • Flexibility: Due to the limited number of training clinics, apprentices must be very flexible with their clinic locations and commutes.

  • Commitment: Candidates must successfully complete the requirements of the program and work for Providence for a minimum of two years after graduation.

  • Start Date: New apprentices are required to start on August 24, 2026.

As part of the application process, candidates must self-record and submit a short video answering two interview questions. Applications without video submissions will not be considered. Instructions will be provided to candidates after their application is submitted. The program application will close on June 16, 2026.

Required qualifications:

  • Coursework/Training and Enrollment in the Medical Assistant (MA) Apprenticeship Program within 60 days of hire.

  • Upon hire: National Provider BLS - American Heart Association
Preferred qualifications:

  • 6 months of Medical assistant experience.

  • 6 months of Healthcare experience in a setting with an Electronic Health Record (EHR).

  • 6 months of prior experience providing a high level of customer service in a fast-paced environment

Posted are the minimum and the maximum wage rates on the wage range for this position. The successful candidate's placement on the wage range for this position will be determined based upon relevant job experience and other applicable factors. These amounts are the base pay range; additional compensation may be available for this role, such as shift differentials, standby/on-call, overtime, premiums, extra shift incentives, or bonus opportunities.
