Job Description

The Department of Medicine at Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University is seeking an outstanding Medical Assistant to join the team.

Position assists physicians, APPs, and nursing staff with patient care to include patient triage, referral orders, retrieve imaging and lab results, process work tasks, messages in the EHR and patient portal, assists other clinical staff with daily clinical and administrative tasks, and stock/prepare exam rooms. Also prepares patients for provider visits and assisting providers with procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews list of patients coming in for next day’s appointments and obtains any missing clinical information prior to the visit.

  • Manage the additional support staff within the division, responsible for staff scheduling, coverage and

  • Phone triage and assist in calling patients & pharmacies to relay prescription, advice or instructions for the providers.

  • Take vital signs such as height, weight, temperature and blood pressure, records in electronic health record.

  • Chaperons and assists providers and nurses for in office procedures/exams

  • Maintains clean, well-equipped examination rooms, cleans and sterilizes

  • Stock examination rooms and triage area with medical Inventory and submit reorder requests to office manager.

  • Check EMR tasks, respond to patient messages and address prescription refills, prior-authorization requests, and questions for providers/APPs

  • Give injections

  • Perform departmental employee respirator fit testing and coordinate with Environmental Services.

  • Manage internal/external referrals for the division

  • Check-in and check-out patients if needed, obtain and scan intake paperwork

  • Will travel to other Department of Medicine practices to provide support when there are staff absences.

  • Anticipates needs, problems, critical issues and opportunities as they arise and advises nursing supervisor accordingly.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by clinical nurse supervisor or Director of Nursing

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications and Skills:

  • Successful completion of a Medical assistant program (or equivalent military training) and certification (CMA, CCMA, or RMA) is required or ability to obtain certification within the first 90-days of employment. Must complete a Basic Life Support (BLS) class and re-certify every 2 years.

  • Customer service-oriented individual is required.
  • Must have some working knowledge of EMR documentation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous medical office experience with relevant functions in a doctor's office preferred.
