Media & Communications Specialist - One Year Fixed Term - Perth

Join Western Power as a Media and Communications Specialist in our Perth Office and play a key role in shaping how we connect with our customers, communities and stakeholders. On a 12-month fixed-term basis, you will develop and deliver media and communication initiatives that support our strategic priorities, manage media engagement, and provide expert advice during both planned and emerging situations.

Your Role in Action

  • Enhance and maintain strong relationships with journalists, key media representatives and stakeholders, acting as a trusted voice and key point of contact for Western Power.
  • Develop and deliver proactive media strategies and engagement plans that strengthen our reputation, showcase our work and support strategic business objectives.
  • Manage reactive media enquiries and emerging issues with professionalism, sound judgement and a solutions-focused approach.
  • Develop and support media capability across the business including the roll out training to ensure consistent messaging and effective media engagement aligned with strategic objectives.
  • Act as a media liaison and spokesperson where required, including being part of the on-call roster, working afterhours during significant incidents.
  • Provide strategic media and external communications advice to leaders and stakeholders, helping shape messaging for a range of audiences and channels.
  • Create engaging content across traditional and digital platforms, working collaboratively with communications, brand and stakeholder engagement teams to maximise impact.
  • Monitor, analyse and report on media activity, providing insights that inform decision-making and keep leaders informed of emerging trends, risks and opportunities.
  • Play a key role in incident and crisis communications, representing the communications function within emergency management responses and helping manage Western Power's reputation during complex or high-profile events.

What Makes You a Great Fit

  • Demonstrated experience in media relations, corporate communications, public affairs or a similar role, with the ability to build credibility and influence across a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to develop and deliver strategic communication and media engagement initiatives that drive positive outcomes and support organisational objectives.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a talent for crafting clear, compelling messages for a variety of audiences and channels.
  • Strong relationship-building and stakeholder engagement capabilities, with the confidence to provide trusted advice and navigate complex or high-profile situations.
  • A proactive and adaptable approach to problem solving, with the ability to assess issues quickly, exercise sound judgement and respond effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Qualifications in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or a related discipline, with experience in issues, incident or crisis communications desirable but not essential.
