Job Description

Universal Field Robots – A Sandvik Company

Mechatronics Engineer– Eagle Farm, Qld.

About the opportunity:

This is an exciting opportunity to join UFR as a Mechatronics Engineer, where you will design, develop, and integrate advanced electrical and software systems that enable autonomous operation of mobile mining equipment. Reporting to the Mechatronics Engineering Manager, you will play a key role in delivering innovative automation solutions that support Sandvik’s “Zero-Entry Mine” strategy and enhance safety and productivity in mining environments.

In this role, you will lead electrical design for mobile machinery, develop and troubleshoot PLC software, and integrate hardware and communication protocols to ensure seamless system functionality. You will also support on-site and off-site field trials, diagnose and resolve technical issues, and maintain compliance with safety standards and engineering processes.

Beyond day-to-day responsibilities, you will contribute to cross-functional projects, drive continuous improvement, and help shape cutting-edge automation technology that positions UFR as a leader in OEM-agnostic solutions for the mining industry.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and review wiring harnesses for mobile equipment, ensuring compliance with UFR and industry standards.
  • Select, integrate, and configure hardware components for autonomous systems.
  • Develop and troubleshoot PLC software for mobile machinery.
  • Implement and maintain communication protocols such as CAN, J1939, and CANOpen.
  • Conduct code reviews and manage version control to ensure quality and traceability.
  • Support field trials by creating test plans, diagnosing issues, and implementing fixes.
  • Travel to operational sites across Australia and internationally for product development and commissioning.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for installations, modifications, and deployed systems.
  • Collaborate in project scoping and design, ensuring deliverables meet timelines and quality standards.
  • Uphold integrity, accountability, and compliance with safety and professional standards.

About you

You are a degree‑qualified engineer in Mechatronics, Electrical, Software, or a related discipline, with a strong interest in automation and advanced control systems. You have at least 2 years of experience designing and integrating electrical and software solutions for mobile machinery or robotics, and you’re comfortable working across PLC programming, communication protocols, and system troubleshooting. If you bring significantly more experience, or strengths in some (but not all) of these areas, we’d still love to hear from you.

Your technical expertise is complemented by strong problem-solving skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams. You thrive in dynamic environments, enjoy tackling complex challenges, and are comfortable supporting field trials both on-site and remotely.

You have exposure to mining automation, mobile machinery or heavy equipment control systems. Familiarity with CAN protocols (e.g. J1939/CANopen), networking fundamentals and functional safety (e.g. ISO 13849/IEC 61508) are desirable but not essential.

Above all, you are proactive, detail-oriented, and committed to delivering high-quality engineering solutions that drive innovation and support UFR’s mission.

What we offer

  • Training and development opportunities, from extensive internal programs to contributions towards external studies.
  • Company-funded paid parental leave, with superannuation contributions during the leave period.
  • Sandvik Wellness Program to support and enhance your health and wellbeing
  • Comprehensive Employee Benefits Program, including salary sacrifice options, and a Length of Service Recognition program.

Who we are:

Are you a passionate technologist who thrives on solving complex problems, supporting diverse business needs, and driving best practices? Join UFR, now proudly operating under Sandvik, where we develop innovative autonomous robotic applications that are transforming industries like mining, agriculture, and construction.

Our robots are built with advanced sensing and computing technology to make outdoor work smarter, safer, and more efficient.
