The Infrastructure Management group at the Department of Public Works supports Nova Scotia’s 1,800 buildings and infrastructure assets across a wide range of clients. We maintain and support various government buildings and other built assets, including museums, core buildings and office buildings supporting the work of government, correctional centres, and justice centres. We are also responsible for the oversight of various Dams and Historical Vessels stationed throughout the province.

Infrastructure Management supports a wide range of Client requests ranging from Electrical, Mechanical and Architectural replacements as well as Maintenance related repairs and solutions. Infrastructure Management supports a wide range of historical buildings and assets and helps to maintain the provincial diversity and culture these assets represent.

Without our Infrastructure Management’s proactive measures, equipment issues or failures could lead to an interruption of services provided. The Mechanical Trades Coordinator is just one of our key team players who support the overall safety and efficiency of our provincial building infrastructure.

About Our Opportunity

As the Mechanical Trades Coordinator, you manage the overall delivery of the Mechanical Trades Division. This includes the development, monitoring, and adherence of operational procedures and standards, hiring, selection, scheduling, and performance management. You ensure services are delivered in accordance with standards. This is accomplished through effective human resources management and regular quality assurance. Manages a diverse Mechanical team whereby the nature of the work is primarily operational and front-facing to a variety of client groups.

Primary Accountabilities

Accountabilities includes repairs, maintenance, and new installations relating to:

• Managing multiple construction projects for delivery within the mechanical construction area within a variety of operational and capital budgets, conducting analyses, bringing forward issues that may impact forecasts and projections.
• Delivering own small-scale or medium-scale construction and maintenance projects by working within an established program management plan, including collaboration with other supervisors. Responsible for project management functions as they relate to supervision of mechanical trades staff (internal and external), including reporting on safety, scheduling and budget forecasting.
• Providing input into the development of procedures for an area within the department or government, then monitoring the implementation of those procedures. Delivering prescribed outcomes for area of responsibility by working within established strategic planning systems.
• Ensuring appropriate safety, quality and risk management processes are followed, identifying shortcomings and suggesting improvements in current compliance processes, systems and procedures within assigned unit and/or discipline. Regularly reviewing and reporting on the effectiveness of operations.
• Delivering outcomes by managing others and working within established systems.
• Supporting internal clients to ensure their needs are met and/or helping senior colleagues manage client relationships.
• Developing and/or delivering a plan for internal communications with guidance from senior colleagues. Supporting or managing a part of the operation of knowledge management system.

Qualifications and Experience

You have High School completion, a Red Seal (Plumber and Steamfitter) Journey Person Certificate (interprovincial), plus seven (7) years of related experience in commercial/institutional building construction and maintenance. You must have at least three (3) years of experience in a supervisory capacity.

Frequent travel across the province is a component of this position; as such, a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is required.

You demonstrate an excellent working knowledge of the following:

• National Building Code of Canada;
• National Fire Code of Canada;
• Canadian Electrical Code;
• Occupational Health and Safety Act and General Regulations; and
• current construction safety practices and procedures.

Your ability to work within financial constraints, along with reading and interpreting specifications and drawings are essential to your success in this role. Also essential to this position are strong public relations skills, planning and organizational skills as well as good verbal and written communications skills.

You ensure the effective management of human and financial resources by setting and evaluating staff performance targets, ensuring safety policies and procedures are adhered to, promoting diversity and a healthy workplace, demonstrating leadership competencies, respecting corporate human resources practices, promoting teamwork and individual development, maintaining internal communications, monitoring expenditures while adhering to procurement guidelines.

Safety training in the following are considered assets: First Aid certification and CPR, WHMIS, Scaffolding Safety, Fall Protection, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, and Confined Space Awareness. Formal training in Project Management, a good knowledge of government procurement policy and tendering procedures are also considered assets.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions

Work is primarily performed indoors within institutional and construction environments, with occasional outdoor work where typical hazards of a construction site may be present. Safety is a core priority, and you are expected to adhere to all departmental safety policies and safe work practices when operating tools, equipment, and machinery.
Some duties may involve physical activity such as climbing, working at heights, or entering confined spaces. The position also includes an administrative component, which will be performed in an office setting using computers and related software applications.

Pay Grade:EC 10

Salary Range:$3,247.28 - $4,059.12 Bi-Weekly
