THE POSITION
The Mechanical Test Engineer is responsible for coordinating and completing product testing and validation activities that support product development, regulatory compliance, and customer requirements. This hands-on role will build and modify prototypes, develop test plans and fixtures, operate specialized lab equipment, analyze results, and prepare clear test reports. Working closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, external laboratories, and customers, you will help ensure products meet performance and compliance requirements before release.
HOW YOU WILL BE MAKING AN IMPACT
- Plan and complete product validation testing based on product development and customer requirements.
- Develop test plans, procedures, fixtures, setups and acceptance criteria.
- Build, assemble, modify, and troubleshoot prototypes and pre-production units.
- Fabricate and modify parts using 3D printers, CNC equipment, hand tools, basic MIG welding and general metal and wood fabrication tools.
- Operate and maintain specialized lab equipment, including optical testing equipment, environmental and UV chambers and electromechanical and electropneumatic test systems.
- Execute verification testing, analyze results and prepare clear and thorough test reports.
- Coordinate with Supply Chain to obtain prototype parts and manage prototype and test inventory.
- Work with external laboratories to coordinate testing, samples, timelines and results.
- Support customer interactions related to product testing and validation when required.
- Participate in project planning and technical design reviews, providing input on product performance, testability and validation requirements.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support design for manufacturability and assembly.
- Maintain internal tools and systems used to track testing activities, equipment, and test data.
- Coordinate prototype shop activities and the allocation of test equipment.

- Prototypes, test fixtures and equipment setups are built safely and efficiently.

- Product issues and failures are identified, investigated, and communicated promptly.
- Prototype parts, test equipment and records are organized and readily available.
- Competing priorities and project deadlines are managed effectively.
- Technical findings are clearly communicated to internal teams, external laboratories and customers.
WHAT SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE YOU REQUIRE
- Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- 5-7 years of relevant experience in mechanical testing, prototype development, manufacturing, or a related engineering environment is preferred. Candidates with less experience may be considered if they demonstrate strong hands-on prototype-building and testing experience.
- Hands-on experience building, modifying and testing mechanical or electromechanical prototypes.
- Experience operating CNC equipment and using hand and power tools.
- Basic welding and general fabrication experience.
- Working knowledge of electrical and pneumatic components.
- Experience developing and executing test plans, procedures, fixtures and reports.
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes, including machining, welding, sheet metal fabrication, 3D printing, injection molding and assembly.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical requirements.
- General knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
- Experience with SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software.
- Strong mechanical aptitude, analytical ability, organization and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities within tight timelines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for working with customers, external laboratories and cross-functional teams.
- Willing and able to travel within Canada, the USA and internationally as required.
