Scope / Overview
The Mechanical Technician is responsible for maintaining and repairing natural gas compressor packages and associated mechanical equipment in a field production environment. This position supports safe, reliable compressor operations by performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical issues, assisting with repairs, and ensuring equipment reliability. Technicians will work closely with other mechanics and operations personnel while supporting multiple field locations as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on compressor packages and associated equipment.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical issues on natural gas compression equipment.
- Perform maintenance on Caterpillar engines (required), Waukesha engines, Ariel compressors, and related compressor package equipment.
- Plan, organize, and execute preventive maintenance (PM) activities.
- Troubleshoot basic mechanical and electrical issues.
- Monitor compressor performance and provide operational feedback.
- Assist senior mechanics with major repairs and overhauls.
- Maintain accurate maintenance documentation and work records.
- Follow all ExxonMobil safety, environmental, and operational procedures.
- Utilize Microsoft Office applications for documentation and reporting.
- Support maintenance activities at other field locations as business needs require.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Minimum one year of compression, production, mechanical maintenance, or related industrial experience.
- Basic understanding of natural gas compression processes.
- Basic knowledge of compressor packages and associated systems.
- Mechanical aptitude with troubleshooting skills.
- Basic electrical troubleshooting ability.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English.
Required Experience
- Hands-on Caterpillar engine maintenance experience is required.
- Experience performing maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on Caterpillar-powered compressor packages.
- Candidates without Caterpillar engine experience will not be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
- OEM training, trade school certification, or equivalent mechanical training.
- Experience maintaining:
- Waukesha engines
- Ariel compressors
- Other natural gas compressor packages
- Previous upstream oil & gas or midstream compression experience.
- Strong planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
Physical Requirements
- Operate heavy equipment including cranes and manlifts.
- Stand for extended periods (up to 75% of the workday).
- Lift 50+ pounds occasionally.
- Climb ladders and work at heights.
- Work in confined spaces when required.
- Work outdoors in extreme heat and cold.
- Work in high-noise environments while wearing hearing protection.
- Wear required PPE including FR clothing, hard hat, eye protection, gloves, hearing protection, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots.
- Frequently use computers and office equipment for documentation.
Preferred Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience maintaining natural gas compressor packages in upstream or midstream operations, with required Caterpillar engine experience and additional experience on Waukesha engines and Ariel compressors. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong preventive maintenance skills, mechanical troubleshooting ability, basic electrical knowledge, excellent safety practices, and the ability to work independently in a field environment.
