Job Description

Job Summary

The Mechanical Systems Manager is accountable for the end‑to‑end performance, integrity, and risk governance of all mechanical systems across airport facilities. The role ensures that mechanical infrastructure supporting passenger handling, safety systems, and critical operations performs reliably under continuous operational demand. Acting as the engineering authority for mechanical assets, the role governs lifecycle management, reliability strategy, safety compliance, and capital investment decisions to protect airport continuity and asset value.

Job Responsibilities 1

Mechanical Asset Performance Ownership

Own the operational reliability, availability, and compliance of all mechanical systems across terminals, airside facilities, and support buildings, ensuring mechanical failures do not disrupt airport operations, safety systems, or passenger flow.

Maintenance Strategy & Reliability Governance

Define and enforce asset‑specific maintenance strategies based on system criticality, operational demand, and failure risk. Use reliability data and performance history to prevent unplanned outages and extend asset life.

Operational Risk & Failure Management

Identify high‑risk mechanical systems and single‑point failures, establish redundancy and contingency strategies, and lead technical response during major mechanical incidents or system degradation.

Safety, Compliance & Engineering Assurance

Act as accountable authority for mechanical system safety, ensuring compliance with engineering standards, statutory regulations, and aviation operational requirements. Maintain audit readiness and engineering assurance.

System Upgrades & Lifecycle Optimisation

Lead assessment, justification, and execution of mechanical system upgrades, refurbishments, and replacements to improve reliability, maintainability, and performance under evolving airport demand.

Integration with Airport Operations

Ensure mechanical systems are fully aligned with airport operational requirements, coordinating with terminals, airside operations, HVAC, electrical, and IT systems to avoid cross‑system dependencies becoming operational risks.

Contractor & Technical Workforce Governance

Establish clear technical standards, scopes of work, and accountability for internal teams and specialist contractors delivering mechanical services. Ensure competence, quality, and safety discipline across all service providers.

Performance Analytics & Continuous Improvement

Develop mechanical system performance metrics, failure trend analysis, and asset‑health reporting to inform leadership decisions and drive continuous improvement initiatives.

Engineering Safety & Regulatory Compliance

Strong knowledge of mechanical safety standards, statutory compliance obligations, and engineering assurance practices relevant to aviation infrastructure.

Asset Renewal & Capital Decision‑Making

Ability to evaluate mechanical asset condition and determine renewal, upgrade, or replacement strategies based on risk, cost, and operational impact.

Technical Leadership & Governance

Proven authority to lead engineering teams, enforce standards, and make defensible technical decisions under operational pressure.

Job Experience

15–18+ years of progressive responsibility in mechanical systems management within airports, transport infrastructure, or other safety‑critical facilities.Demonstrated accountability for mechanical system reliability, failure prevention, and operational risk management.Experience leading technical teams and managing specialist mechanical service providers in regulated environments.
